Second chance offers on ebay

RYKRYK Posts: 35,797 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bid on an item offered by John Maben on ebay. Then, I get a "second chance" offer email from Dinu Petre:

Hi, you've bid on my ebay auction. The winning bidder emailed me telling he can't buy it anymore.... and I really need to sell it!If you are still interested please let me know what is the price you would buy it from me right now? Let me know
Auction URL : http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=3958115686

Thank you in advance.
Dinu

How can we stop this scam?

Comments

  • Both parties need to report it to EBAY, along with copies of the email, including headers. I know this wont stop it, but it will help. BTW, I now post "No second chance offers from me" in the description of items I know will go over 700 dollars. Just to head some of this off. "Offers" of this type have been sent to several underbidders on two of my auctions so far.

I offered old Dinu $1500 for it, providing he can show me a picture of the coin with today's newspaper. I even suggested an Eastern European newspaper would do, since this is likely where this scam is originating. We'll see what happens next.

Great intrigue. Sounds like a movie scene where a kidnap victim holds the newspaper while the abductor takes the picture. Cool.

I do not accept nor offer "second-chance" offers. I keep it simple. Less headaches.

  • Eastern European newspaper. That's hilarious. Ryk, I am sure you won't hear anymore from them because they know you are on to them.image

  • Was the second chance offer done through EBay? Or just a straight e-mail?

    Here is Dinu's response:

    Hello
The coin is in US my wife will ship the coin to you.

to my response to the second chance offer:

    Dinu Petre,

I am very interested in buying the gold dollar from
the ebay auction for $1500. Since I am not sure that
you are a legitimate seller, please send me a picture
of the coin in the slab with today's newspaper,
probably from Eastern Europe where you are located.

Anyone have any idea how I should take it from here?

There is nothing complicated about second chance offers. I've used them on several occasions when I've had multiples of an item. It's an efficient way to get rid of stuff.

That said, scammers like RYK's buddy need to be strung up.

    RYK:

I have not used westernunion.com before. Is it easy? Is it safe?

    Dinu:

Western Union Transfer is the only service that has ultimate authentication of the identity of the receiver of funds. Several IDs and utility bills are required before the funds are paid. Therefore, no one else but your seller can pick up the money.

    RYK:

I will work on it and get to you when I am through.

RYK: You got him on the hook now. Time to reel 'im in. You might want to check out 419 Eater for some good tricks on how to bait these guys along even further. It's for the typical Nigerian scammers, but I think it is good research for your mugu. Have fun!
