Pete Rose Master Thoughts

Hey Guys
Just your thoughts. After 2 years at #1 on the Rose master, i am toying with the idea of getting out.I have come to realize that these master sets are a never ending work in progress and almost an impossible 100% complete. Granted i got into this because of the love of cards and Pete Rose as my favorite all-time (PLAYER) not to be mistaken as my favorite all-time person. Most of the fun of doing these sets is to complete to %100. When i got into this, this set was half the size or less than it is now but i was still willing to hang on because alot of the fun was the search for new items. Now everything is coming out of the woodwork and i wouldn't mind if it were vintage, truly rare items but all this new garbage. I have literally seen hundreds of things that will be added in the future just from the mid to late 80's. Even still if they were what i consider legit cards i would still stay in. But some of the crap PSA is now grading most notably hand cut crap( I need to become a frikin surgeon just to keep up) is out of hand. I love the hunt and most of the cards but truth be told most of this new stuff will never hold any value and purchasing it is just like throwing money away. I am finding i am just buying these cards to reach that unobtainable %100 and getting away from why i got into this in the first place. The love of true baseball cards not Team cards with my favorite player somewhere in those blurry faces or the same drawn picture on a 52 card deck TWICE. Or a crudely drawn picture on a milk carton or i could go on and on but i won't. I have vented enough. Any Thoughts?

Why get them graded? The joy of the really rare stuff is simply finding a copy, not necessarily finding it in PSA 10. Don't let the registry screw with your collecting joys and goals. Find the stuff because YOU want it, not because someone else tells you you should.

    Well said ajw.

Ed, that is one of the two biggest reasons I got out. The other being I wanted to spread my card money around to other players/sets. You have put together one helluva set, and I am surprised that you and Marc (#1 Mike Schmidt Master) have not been recognized for your acheivements.

  • Thanks for your opinions guys and especially to you Neal for helping me achieve that #1 spot. I will be holding on to for sure the Nabisco Rose. Probably my favorite card of all-time. Thanks Ed

  • think it about it a little longer. If you still want to sell them in a week, then do it. Might as well spread your money around. I would think that collecting a particular player would be cool, but I wouldn't like the feeling of never being able to complete the master set.

thats a pretty impressive set you have Ed.

its over 500 cards and you have made it to 95%. thats the size of a monster 70's set and all the players are starts!

I do agree with you that these somewhat rare cards from the late 80's wont hold their price.

while a lot of people would love to do a Pete Rose basic set, very few would care for a master set.

If i was in your shoes i would sell. Keep the basic set and upgrade with the new funds. I would keep any of the cards i truly like, cool poses, good memories, and keep the ones you truly believe to be rare like venezuelans and such.

  • Sell the cards and use the money to buy boxes and boxes of 2005 Topps Heritage.
  • If you do bail out, I'd be interested in some of the harder to find Topps issues of Rose.

Limit yourself to cards while he was active - forget the rest.

  • I have a bunch of high grade cards from the 77 Pepsi Deck, 78 Sportsdeck and 86 Topps Pete Rose Set. Most of the cards are PSA 9s, but I have 30 or more PSA 10s. Send me an email to Barkusd@gtlaw.com or a pm if you are interested in any of the Roses. Pricing will depend upon quantity purchased.

  • I've been collecting Pete since I was 9 (I'm 36 now). I've gone thru many periods of looking hot and heavy and then taking years and years off. Right now, I'm concentrating mainly on locating some of the tougher cards, well, the expensive ones. I've got most of the '60's Topps. Down to trying to locate the god-like cards: 67 Topps Stand-Ups (I'm naive, no idea really what that would run), 67 Topps Punch-Outs, and some of the other slightly easier to find cards like the 69 4-in-1.
I only have 1 card graded (69 Topps Super PSA 9), and I only bought it because they were hard to find. I'd rather stay away from the graded stuff, but those cards are so nice looking. Makes me think at times, I might have to replace some of the cards I bought back in the 80's for some slightly nicer stuff. Either way, I'm really only interested right now to finish up the 60's and 70's Topps.

anyway, didn't mean to go into a life story. not sure how you guys usually post want lists and such, still fairly new to the whole forum thing.

Your post summarizes the reasons I won't start any more player sets - that's for sure. I've had a lot of fun with the Mike Schmidt Master Set - and it was one of the very first player sets on the PSA Registry. But it gets pretty silly grading out some of the cards that have a retail value in MINT condition of about $0.20 ungraded. Just money down the drain - and for a few hundred in grading fees for a submission of modern cards, I would almost invariably rather buy some nice pre-war these days. That being said - I still do submit some Schmidt cards - and I happily admit that I subsidize some of the costs with oddball cards that fit into other Player Sets. I look at those putting together player sets that go into the 1990s [thinking of Mattingly, Nolan Ryan, Mark McGwire, Bonds and others] - and the amount of effort required is enormous. Not to mention the funds required - with the full knowledge that even break-even in the long run may be exceedingly tough.

Oh well - collect what you like - that is what is great about this hobby, you can do whatever you want, and you don't need to have your collection dictated by what someone else on the Registry wants. Your only real competition should be yourself and your collecting desires.

As for the Rose Master set - I will soon be submitting a 1983 Tastykake and two or three postcards from the 1983 Phillies Perez-Steel centenial set. Don't think any of those have been graded - and I know that tracking down the 1983 Tastykakes are one of the toughest runs for Phillies collectors...

The only one I recall sold at a SportsCards Plus auction 3 or 4 years ago. I believe it brought over $4000.
  • Wow, that's such a cool card. Thanks for sharing the scan. And at $4k, looks like a picture of one will probably be the closest I get.

I collect Brooks Robinson cards-it has grown into a passion-i want one of every issue during his playing career-forget about that new garbage-keep on collecting those Rose cards-you will kick yourself for bailing out-as mentioned, collect for the FUN of it.i still need 6 cards and the I can say i have everyone-2 cards,1961 Dice game the 68 3d proof and maybe a 67 punchout will never come my way, but that doesnt bother me-you cant have it all! Its not to bad of a collection when you can say you have every card except for ones that NO one has really ever seen/dont exist/cant afford/....
