PSA/DNA Certified?????

I couldnt resist bringing up this topic. James Spence has been stamping his name on so many things, I think he forgets to look at some of them. Check out lot number 926 in Mastronets latest auction. I wonder if the lot was withdrawn because Jim Bottomley forgot how to spell his name? Don't fret though, it still would have come with that great James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA letter to prove it was legit........

Link to the auction. The lot was pulled. You must be the same guy that has been complaining about it over on the Beckett boards. They've made a error, and have pulled the auction. Sure it would be nice for them to have not screwed up like this, but once the problem was brought to their attention, the proper action was taken, Surely you can't fault them for that?

PSA/DNA has probably graded a few hundred thousand autographs since they opened their doors, so let's cut them some slack. We're not even sure if this is a legitimate mistake. It's entirely possible that the Bottomley autograph is legit, but Mastro has pulled the auction, so we'll never know.

Nothing has changed, PSA/DNA is the most trusted name in the business and nothing in this thread will change that. Take your PSA/DNA bashing back 'across the street.'

Yes...I would be concerned if they hadn't pulled the auction. What kind of "conspiracy" are we looking for here?

Mistakes are made - they pulled the item - what am I missing?

If you have anything interesting, please let us know.

  • Hi Mike
Not looking for some type of conspiracy. I just find it hard to believe that such a poor item can be authenticated. I would expect quite a bit more coming from PSA/DNA. Most card shop owners would pass on the ball if it was brought into them for examination. I guess the part that bothers me the most is just the fact that there is one item in a major auction that is bogus. I don't like the idea of the attitude "they are allowed to make mistakes". When you pay for a professional opinion, there is no room for error. I am sorry, but with tens of THOUSANDS of people paying for a service, even only one bad item leaves the door open for every other item. This is not about "bashing" PSA/DNA. Not even close. Just that they advertise how much more an item will bring with thier stamp of authenticity on it. It isnt that Mastro's pulled the auction so all is fine. Its just that it even made it that far while advertising it came with the approval.

Who is perpetuating this feeling? What is the source? I'm neither apologetic nor unnecessarily critical of their procedures. I would guess that PSA would be the first to say..."we messed up and sure would not like that to happen again" - when I make a genuine mistake and I will...my thought is to take responsibility, learn from it and move on.

And, this is an 'art' not really a true science - I liken it to an "opinion" with a scientific approach - or an
"applied science" rather than theoretically pure.
Mistakes are part of the game and will always be there - but you are correct the "attitude" toward those inevitable occurences is key.
