Help needed on a VAM question about an 82CC

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was looking at this 82CC in an old PCGS rattler graded MS64 and noticed this doubling (?) in front of the lips with some possible doubling (??) under the nose and below the lips. I also noticed some doubling or extra metal around the digits in the date. Any help appreciated. I have this coin with me now so I can supply and other pics if a reference is needed. Thanks in advance.

Nice pictures! Unfortunately, I think what you are seeing is some clashing from the reverse. Check for doubling of the date, especially the "188". In any case you've got a fine looking coin there.
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!

Nice find! I also have an 82-CC (GSA) with pretty close the same "Doubling".

There is some at the back of the head too.

Here is a thread I started awhile back.

I believe these are a result of Die Clashing.
  • #2? DOUBLED 882 AND REVERSE???? not sure, i just started. says "polish mark below first 8"

i think the face could be from a clash. not even close to an expert i have been doing this for a week.
  • Yes, this is die clashing around the lips. Can't really tell about the date but it may be doubling.

I believe your assessment Jeff that this is clashing, but to my eye- I see doubling of the elements (resembling the elements) both under the nose, above and below the lips and above the chin. As Mr. Lee sees on his coin also, there is doubling behind the head also (also resembling the elements). There is doubling evident in the date also. All this being said- I am NO Morgan expert.

I loved clashed dies. And your 2nd picture shows nice doubling on the date, I'll see if I can help with the vam later. I want to show you guys what you are seeing, it's hard to understand at first, but this will help....

    image

What you are seeing near her lips is a reverse image of the wreath from the reverse of the coin, not doubling. On this coin you can really see the image of the leaves

I think it just depends on the die rotation on how it shows. There are coins with multiple clashes all slightly different rotations.

Here's a pic of a clashed die that shows the elements from the leaves near the cotton bolls...

At first it is hard to get to understand the elements in reverse, but in time it will get easier and you will see them right away. The first place I aways look is on the reverse. That area on the right hand side next to the top two wreath bunches, that V shape is very recognizable.

Looks like your coin may be a vam 6. But, check the ear, is the right side doubled? Also would you be so kind as to post a pic of the front of her neck from the chin down, and a closeup of the v area under the hair up from the second star on the right. These two areas are where the n and the t show up from clashed dies.

Here are the areas you asked for Becky, There are some marks on the plastic that hinder the second pic a bit. I see what you mean- image

No n on her throat that I can see, she may have a clashed s in the second pic which is a 6a, but the slab makes it hard to say. I go with either a 6 or 6a, but hopefully someone else will come and help out. image The last pic really shows the doubling on the date!!

Have you ever gone to Ashmore and looked at the pics of all the updates? It's worth the time it takes to download, it's great!!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful ladyimage

Good point! Mine has a rotation of about 5º to 10º.
