ebay etiquette question

I keep track of my ebay purchases thru the "my ebay" page. When I receive a card I leave feedback for the seller and when he leaves feedback for me I delete the item and the transaction is complete.

Over the last two months I've made a lot of purchases and I'm noticing that some sellers do not return feedback.

I currently have 7 items where the seller didn't leave feedback.

Is it ok to ask the seller to leave feedback or is this out of line?

I usually pay immediately thru Paypal unless they don't accept it.

What do you guys think? Should I ask for my feedback or just delete the items and move on?

Thanks, Bob

  • boggs,

    I just checked....I've left 2,128 and received 1,747.

So 381 times I haven't received feedback on a deal.

That's not right. I think I'm gonna start hunting it down.

    Thanks, Bob

Psahockeyman - by all means, you should pester a seller to leave you positive FB after a transaction...if you are concerned about building your rating. Hounding a buyer is a different story, but you state sellers are not leaving you FB. Thats not right. Nothing wrong with dropping them a remider email. Best regards.

  • Hi guys I email the seller 1000 times a day and phone them all day long till I get my feedback. Just joking thought it would be funny though. I agree with the forum. When I do not receive the courtesy feedback I ask the seller for it. Many sellers have over 100 feedback a day so sometimes it just gets missed. Some sellers have an automatic feedback system for the buyers who pay. Take care guys

The feedback system is OK, but once we all build up an obviously positive rating, it does begin to become less important. At this point, after over 6700 positives, I really don't care if every seller or buyer leaves feedback for me.

When I function as a seller, I've had to adopt a policy of waiting for buyers to leave feedback before I will. I realize that isn't the way it's supposed to work, but unfortunately a couple of knuckleheads can change your outlook. I'll be glad to give it, but only if someone leaves it for me (and they don't have to ask since my auction listing service allows me to leave it for multiple buyers at once and I check to see who's left it on a weekly basis).

Think about it...a seller, once he's been paid, has absolutely no reason not to leave a positive. He's been paid and that's really all he wants. However, a long while back, I had 2 buyers within the space of a month, who for some bizarre reason, decided they were not happy with an item and instead of asking for a refund (which I would have gladly given), left a neg. One even went so far as to write me an e-mail, telling me how pleased he was...asked for feedback, which was given..then dropped a neg. Both bidders have long since departed EBay--or more likely been forced off for any number of reasons-- but I got stuck with the big red. It doesn't really matter since my reputation is solid--and has been for the 8 years I've been an EBay member-- but it was irritating--and from then on I decided it just wasn't worth it.

while it would be nice to get as much positives as possible, its really not a big deal.

I leave feedback every once in a while and not always on time.

I get annoyed at sellers, particularly power sellers. who will not leave feedback until they get it from me, especially after I have made an instant PAYPAL payment.
If I paid in good faith...they should leave feedback in good faith.........................

My two negative feedbacks came as retaliation from sellers who didn't like my legitimate negative feedback left for them. BUT I PAID INSTANTLY and:

A I shouldn't have to wait 6 weeks for them to ship my items!!

B Should get the item in the description and scan.

Needless to say I have left feedback for all but two of my transactions (out of almost 2000)

  • Update:

I emailed 4 of the 7 sellers last nite asking that they leave the appropriate feedback for the completed transaction. Checked this morning and 2 of them had left feedback. One guy even emailed me and appologized for the late feedback. Pretty good. I guess sometimes if you want something you have to ask for it.

I'm also in agreement with the idea of sellers leaving feedback when they have received payment and shipped the item. That's when their half of the transaction is complete. Most buyers will email the seller if there's a shipping problem or if the card is not as described. If they get neg'd by the buyer they have the option to respond to the neg.

    Thanks guys, Bob

  • This was brought up a month ago... Maybe some detective could revive that thread.
Personally, I don't leave feedback first as the buyer...
It's the seller's obligation to leave it first...
afterall, you trusted them first when you sent them money and completed your end of the deal.
Whether you like the card or not should not be part of your "evaluation."

If you want to ask, go ahead... just be diplomatic... I have seen a situation where a buyer "pestered" a seller and he seller left a neutral...
Sometimes it takes people a month or two to get around to leaving feedback... especially some larger volume sellers...

and to be fair, from their perspective... when they leave feedback first, they open themselves to more negs and if it's their livlihood... perhaps it doesn't make sense to open themselves to negs.

The other day, one of our members negged a guy for sending a bunch of cards loose in a bubble mailer... sure, it was idiotic... and the cards were damaged.. but the seller had already left him positive feedback first as they should have...
The winner didn't care about a return on a $10.00 deal and wanted to make a statement... it was well justified... but... that's part of the reason many sellers have resorted to holding you feedback hostage until you stroke them first...

One member here posted that they leave feedback when the buyer contacts them to let them know they like the card. In their mind, the transaction is complete once they know the buyer is happy etc...
    I like that.

In any case, you posted a good concern... I alo have a few hundred feedbacks out there that I will never see... but I guess the difference between 1400 and 1700 doesn't matter much to me...
If it does matter to you then you might want to email the seller once you make payment and remind them that positive feedback is very important to you and you would be appreciative if they left you positive feedback for your fast payment and solid follow through... be proactive about the feedback thing at the start.
    Good luck!
  • It's not the feedback count thats the issue. I brought this matter up because the way I track my purchases in "my ebay" brought the matter to light.

The 7 items I mentioned had all been in my possession for at least 2 weeks, meaning the sellers received positive feedback from me at least two weeks ago.......times 381 purchases is just wrong.

I pay instantaneously on 90% of my wins and the 10% who don't accept paypal get a bidpay money order the next day. When the card arrives the seller gets positive feedback that day.

It takes 2 seconds to leave feedback. I just think the sellers should see the deal thru to the end. Leave feedback and move on.

JMO, I still love the bay! Bob

The title of this thread keeps bringing me back - isn't the term "ebay etiquette" like "military intelligence"?

That being said, more and more sellers are holding their feedback for one reason. There are too many idiots on ebay who think leaving negative feedback if they don't like the color of ink on the address is a healthy emotional catharsis. Sellers rely on feedback percentages for their (in many cases) livelihood. Is it right? No, but so what? The way I see it, I'm only responsible for my side of the street - if I'm satisfied with the card I leave positive feedback. The reciprocal positives roll in right behind. Seems to me that if I wait around for the world to be right in my thinking, I'd better come armed with some crossword puzzles.

I remm in my earlier days on ebay seeing some buyers leve negs even after they received the goods and were happy only cuz they did not rec. a positive from the seller!

As a seller I leave feedback when payment is recieved as I have faith in my product. As a buyer I leave it only after it has been recieved.
    Good for you.
  • There are certianly times when NOT leaving feeback has been my "response" of choice. For example, when sellers WAY overgrade a particular item (ie - an item is described as "mint" and once it is received, the actual grade is ex-mt) but I still payed little enough that I would prefer keeping the item. I certainly do NOT wat to leave a positive, yet I feel this is not quite damaging enough to justify leaving a negative/neutral. Also, on lower dollar items, I just don't have time to pursue 2, 3, or 4 email/reply scenarios.
  • I have left 1044, and received 903... I guess thats not too bad after seeing what some others are down

how can accurate feedback be given until the transaction is completed? And the transaction is not completed when the buyer pays the seller; the transaction is completed only after the buyer receives the product.
Thus, at least IMO, the buyer needs to leave feedback first and then the seller will follow up with feedback immediately afterward.

IMHO - the seller delivers feedback on the buyer, who is responsible only for communication and timely payment. Sellers' feedback should not be predicated upon the buyer extolling his virtues. In a perfect world. Positive feedback is a sellers way of saying thanks for choosing to do business with me. Since when is the thanks up to the customer?

I give positive feedback to all my customers upon receipt of payment and I give positive feedback as a buyer when I get the goods and I'm satisfied. Homey don't play games.

  • I agree with MorrellMan.The buyers responsibility is good communication and fast payment.Upon completion,it is the responsibility of the seller to leave feedback.I always do this as well as always leave feedback.I think it is wrong to not leave feedback as the whole premise of e-bay is predicated on the feedback system.

  • Update #2:

Less than 24 hours after the four requests were made,
all four sellers left positive feedback.

So that's my new policy. If 2 weeks passes after I leave
feedback on an item I'll request feedback from the seller.

These guys probably get tied up with submissions, listings,
packaging and shipping and miss the occasional feedback.

  • I agree with the majority thoughts on the board.

As a buyer I am always upset if I don't get feedback.

As a seller, I use to be upset if I didn't get positive feedback. Now I feel that some people aren't going to bother or just dont' care. What's more, if they are upset for some reason and don't give me feedback at all, that's better than a negative.

For keep tracking in My Ebay, once I have gotten a payment and left feedback for the buyer, I delete it out of my ebay. I figure the package is gone and that's the end of it. However, I do put delivery confirmation on every package since I was burned last year when I didn't. Now it goes every single item from a 99cent card to a 100.00 lot. I hate giving refunds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

For all the seller's who hold their feedback until the buyer leaves feedback, what is your intention of doing this? There's is only one conclusion. It's to leave a retaliation negative if the buyer leaves you one first. That's just plain messed up and wrong. The one Neg I have is from a seller who retaliated against me, and I hope I get a chance to meet with that guy someplace, like in a cold dark alley somewhere. Honestly, if the seller stated in their auction that they were going to hold my positive hostage, then I wouldn't buy from them. And when I complete the transaction and the seller does this to me, I never buy from them again. Getting screwed from ebay newbies is part of life, but pissing off good customers is bad for business.
  • As a seller I leave feedback straight away. As a buyer I leave feedback upon completion of the transaction. As an eBayer I don't give much thought at all to the feedback I receive.
  • NickMNickM Posts: 4,895 ✭✭✭
Don't forget that some sellers may not leave feedback right away simply because they wait until they have a lot of transactions to leave feedback for all at once, or may wait for a weekend or other easy day to leave feedback.

Nick, that is true. I do that also. I leave all my feedbacks every week or two. But I also have no problem with the buyer waiting until I do it first. Really it doesn't matter to me if they don't leave feedback at all. I don't even check to see who left me feedback when I leave mine. I really have more important things going on in life to worry about feedback. If they paid, they get a positive, it doesn't matter to me if they return the favor. The only thing I would care about is a negative but I still wouldn't leave somebody a retaliation neg, that would make me just as much scum as them.
