1878-P 7/8 TF VAM help

I just picked up this 1878-P Morgan dollar. It was labeled 7/8 TF. I've never seen such strong tail feathers showing. It's also clashed.
I thought it might be a VAM-41 from the Top 100 list. I was looking through the updates and saw a 41B listed. The description mentioned a die gouge to the right of a cotton leaf. Can't find any pictures, but my coin has a small gouge in this location. LIBERTY is doubled to the left, has a gouge through TY. Lots of other diagnostics on the coin, but I'm hoping this is enough for the 1878 experts.
Is it a 41B? Is there anything else I can look for?

  • Hi,
Your photos, including the die gouge in LIBERTY, match the photos of VAM-41 on page 30-31 of the 7/8 Attribution guide by Oxmann and Hartnett. Dead spot on. Its not a 41a or 41b, but a straight 41, Nice pics! They list as "scarce" with descriptions going Very common, common, scarce, rare, rare/ultra rare. Good find.

  • Thanks Rob. Looks like there's another book I need to buy.
