Opened a pack of 1979 hockey cards, and ate the gum.....

I opened a pack of 1979 hockey cards about a month ago and ate the gum from the pack...i thought about eating it...it was just there looking at me like..."eat me"..so I did just that!

It didnt form in my mouth like gum does..it just cracked all up and turned into little clumps in my mouth..the stick was not soft instead it was hard as a stick.

Anyone else have better results eating old gum from packs?

My mom always wanted my gum when I was a kid. So, I saved the gum from the first "old" packs I bought as a kid. They weren't even that old (maybe 10 years or so) and she still gives me a hard time about it today.

Actually...how is the gum from Topps Heritage? Is it good? Maybe I'll try to get some and send it to her for old time's sake...

  • r u guys crazy, or what????? eating 25 year old gum????? i would NEVER do that--but over the summer i bought an unopened box of 1963 lime JELL-O b/c it had a lew burdette card on the back--decided to open the box and cook up the jello--but didnt have any 41 year old water to use. turned out the jello was pretty good, even with new water. mom had some reddi-whip whipped cream from the eisenhower administration in the back of the fridge--made for a yummy desert! (the card came back a 6)image

Worst thing I ever saw....back in 1987 in Plattsburgh, NY there was someone who had 1955 Bowman packs(dont ask me how much they were..I cant remember!) Anyway, 5 guys played a pack game...person with the worst pack(no listed stars) would have to chew the gum from all 5 packs! It was so hilarious because the guy had one of the worst faces I had ever seen! I couldnt imagine gum from 32 years!
For myself, I tried a piece of 1974 gum back in 1993...very strange texture and didnt chew like gum...kind of what you experienced 1979collector!

I think the older gum that comes with the Topps wax packs should still be good, that is, it shouldn't make you sick. One of the major differences between the gum by Topps, Fleer, and Donruss of that era was that the Topps stuff (made by Bazooka) had a very high sugar content versus the artificial stuff used by Fleer and Donruss. This generally results in the "brittle" effect as the sugar ages and crystalizes. The Fleer and Donruss stuff just erodes away and turns to muck. 20-30 years later, you can still eat one, but not the other.

  • You never know what chemicals that gum can turn into after 25 years, or what they may do to your brain. It may not taste good, but it's cheaper than 25 year old Scotch.

  • Last year I bought a box of 1982 Donruss Golf cards from a case. The box was like new and the gum was pink and looked new, although the texture was a little hard. I know it's crazy but I've often thought about trying the gum from old packs and on this occasion I did. The gum was a little brittle but still a little sweet. It wasn't long before it became bitter and the look on my wife's face once I spit it out was priceless. I'm sure many would think it crazy to try 20+ year old gum, but sometimes you just get the urge.

    Thanks for a great thread.
