Just hit the 10k tag and I am just around 65%

As some of you know I have been building the 65 Topps baseball set. I have strived to build a set that is affordable and nice looking at the same time. With my most recent purchase I have just hit the 10k mark and have done that with an overall GPA at 7.74 When I began this quest I had hoped to build this set brick by brick and finish it for around 15k. I have mostly PSA 8's but some 7's and even a few 6's. I also have around 34 9's. I still need a few HOF's. I figure I will average out at 25.00 per card and keep my 7.75 gpa. It has taken me almost 13 months to get this far.

Sounds like your right on target if you go after less 9's.

    best of luck, Bob

It was dough that I was able to pi$$ away. Still though, makes me think. I will continue to seek out 9's at the price though that I feel comfortable with.
    Good for you.

IMHO the money spent on the collecting of VINTAGE sports cards is fine and good as long as:

A: All your other bills are paid especially credit card bills)

B: You have not overpaid for the cards you have bought

C: Your card collection is properly taken care off. (Graded cards are easy to maintain, but raw cards can be damaged easy enough

I have about $15K invested in the three set listed below. If I needed money I know I could sell my sets the same way I bought them......one card at a time on EBAY and recoup the whole $15K....(or close to it anyway)............and five years from now or beyond I am sure i could make a profit.

.............................hence my money spent is still there!!!

Steve - nice going so far. Take your time, I'll bet you can find a few nice 7's in the HOF's to help keep your cost down.

when you upgrade a card from a 7 to an 8 and later on you sell the 7, do you subtract that price from the 8?

Actually you should deduct it from the cost of the SET....not the particular card.

Though..... further you could use the following example:

If you bought a 7 for $15 and then upgraded and bought an 8 for $50, you now have $65 invested in that particular card number. If you then sell the 7 for $18 you now have $47 invested in that particular card number.

I think most people keep track of their set price rather then individual card prices..........but I may be wrong.

I think if I really kept track of set prices or individual card prices, and got a very good idea of my money spent ............

I might kick myself, extra hard !!!

    yes

I try not to do so much upgrading but it happens.

from the card, the set all the same.
    Good for you.
  • I use Excel and keep a spreadsheet on each of my sets. It looks very much like the registry except I have extra columns which include population, # of cards higher, SMR & what I paid for that card. The SMR columns and the cost column I set to sum at the top of the page so I can see how much the set is costing in relation to the SMR of the cards in the set. At the ned of the set I list any cards which have been removed from the set thru an upgrade and when I sell one I make the appropriate change. I upgrade this just like the registry & works out pretty good for me.

Make sure to include any S/H costs when figuring out your total cash outlay. They can add up with a mainstream Topps set.
  • I say decide what your lowest PSA grade is going to be first, then fill the set accordingly. You have quite a mixed lot of PSA 9 to PSA 6. At some point you are probably going to get rid of the few 6's, but that could be even more costly. If you are comfortable having PSA 6 to PSA 9 then I would say finish the set the best way possible.

Isn't all card collecting crazy anyway??? It's a piece of cardboard, guess we all kinda forget that part.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

That too is included in my total, the 6's I have are minimal in cost to upgrade.

Steve -- I don't think this is crazy at all. It sounds like you approached this project very prudently and if you bailed out tomorrow, you could probably recover what you spent. But what matters most if you are enjoying it. If you love doing this, then how can you put a price of it? Besides, you could probably do a lot worse things with your money.
