How to get a coin club started

I was thinking about starting up a coin club in my area, but I dont have a clue as to where to start. I'm currently in Germany and there are about a half dozen folks who I know that actively collect. Any ideas?

You could all come here and join an already in existance club. Just kidding. Why not just get a bunch of coin collecting friends together once every few weeks at someones house that has a computer. Join this Collectors Universe, have a bunch of questions ready, check out the part of this web site that has sales and giveaways, Try selling or giving something away yourselves to others in the town especially young kids to get them started on coin collecting. Don't have monatary dues or you'll scare away the cheap members. After all what is a coin club except a bunch of people that have something in common. Don't leave out anyone because of age, sex, nationallity, etc. That only makes it not a great club. Exchange ideas and coins with each other. If you or another member travels to another country, have them bring back a coin or two for each of the other members. See the swapping portion of this web site to see if you can all get American coins for German ones. Please don't cheat us.

  • There is info on the ANA web site, www.money.org. I think it pertains to ANA-affiliated clubs, and make have info on getting one off the ground.

Good question. I just started one myself this month! It might be a lot tougher for you since you are in Germany. I did it by having a flyer to give out at some local shows. People saw it and called or emailed me and we had our first meeting. The most difficult thing is finding a meeting room that is free or low cost. At first, there are few members and it hard to say if the club will last. That makes it tough to get money to rent out a place. Try meeting at a restaurant over dinner. That is what we are doing for now.

If interested in a club in Frederick, MD, send me a PM.

Just for your information your lucky you don't live around here. Coin, stamp, paper money type clubs are rare to scarce to impossible. The crime rate is so darn high no one wants anyone to know anything about what you have. My kid used to leave his garage door open when working on anything and poof, everything vanished. Same with my next door neighbor. Most people are afraid to even leave gardenig tools out over knight because they'll vanish. So far this year there has been four stolen cars abandoned across the street from me. Estimated thousands of cars stolen each year in the main city not including suburbs. Not an easy place for a coin club. Lots of gun clubs though.

  • Wishing I had a local coin club, but the closest ones are an hour away... image And that's not counting the rushhour traffic I'd have to go through to get there... image
