Just made a post asking for grading assistance on a 21-D 1V. While I was waiting for replies, I looked at a couple of worn unattributed Morgans. Spotted this die gouge through the D in the DOLLAR. The coin is very circulated, but I think it's a VAM-3L.

I'm using a $200 National brand stereo microscope and a compact Olympus D-40 digital camera (4 megapixels). I hold the camera up to one of the lenses on the scope and shoot. Someday I'll invest in a permanent setup. Right now, I clear off the desk and pull the scope out of a box everytime I want to photograph something.
Will the microscope work on both raw and slabbed coins?

Have you guys been to Ashmore lately? They have added a whole bunch more pics. Last time I was there it was like 400, now it way over 1000. Takes forever to load, but so worth the wait!! Tons of new die gouges, breaks and clashed dies. These guys really do a great job.

It seems to. I only have a couple coins in slabs. There were some reflections when I first tried, but moving the lights helped. Any scratches will show up on the plastic.
The scopes that Becky and others use (from ToysRus) seems to work great too... and cost less. My stereo microscope was a gift... so the price was perfect.
