Do you keep/hoard 40%silver halves? or spend them?

Anyone? I've been holding on to them, but then, what do I know? I'm curious to know who out there keeps em or spends em? Blue skies!

Take 'em to a coin show & sell 'em. With silver @ $7+, you'll get a worthwhile premium.

No kidding. I sold a little over $250.00 face value in December. I had been saving them from roll for about five years and got over $600.00 for them which I used to help buy a key date coin.... Don't spend em.
  • Whoa dad! I had no idea! That's pretty wild~~and are they really melted? pardon my ignorance here.
    blue skies!

Yup, they're melted down for the silver content. As you probably are aware, the 1965 thru 1970 are the dates with 40% silver. 1971 on up--spend 'em.

If they're melted, how come they are everywhere?

  • The combined mintage from 1965 to 1970 minus proofs is close to 900,000,000. So there are quite a few out there.

40 % Silver half dollar bags are generally considered to contain 295 ounces of silver. So it's easy to figure their value !!
You guys actually find these in circulation ?

I collect them till I fill up a nice bag and then sell for silver.....or trade with friends.

I hate them with a passion. Once several years ago while coming back from Indiana, a guy that new I collected coins called me about some silver coins he picked up and wanted to get rid of. He met me at the airport and handed me a bag full of stuff, a few Morgan's but mainly half dollars. I was in a hurry so I looked at a couple of rolls and saw that "most were what appeared to be franklins, 64 kennedy's etc" Until I got home and found that about 8 rolls were nothing but 40% that I figured full 90% melt.

(will say it was a lesson learned to look at everything, and if not enough time, then i pass)

On top of that, no one here locally wants to buy 40% halves becuase its not worth the trouble.
