J.R. Richard getting some exposure of late!

WHo was the member who liked J.R. Richard??? I thought it was downgoesfrazier. Either way they are talking on the new about Tedy Bruschi and his mild stroke. I didn't realize J.R. had a major stroke and was "unable to comeback effectivly" after that. Amazing how these guys in top shape have health problems. Especially after the way I pollute my body and remain OK, for the most part. Also, I noticed J.R. Richard will be signing autographs at the national.

Yeah, I remember JR. Being from Boston, he was one of the few pitchers Clemens could never really seem to beat.
  • If history serves me well J.R had his stroke either during or after the all-star game in either 1980 or 81 and tried a comeback but was never successful. Clemens didn't come up until 1984 so I don't believe he should have never faced JR. I'm sure I will get corrected if I'm wrong.image

Brian, J.R. RIchard threw his last pitch in the big leagues in 1980, I'm not sure if Clemens was even at U.T. at that point. You must be thinking of someone else.

J.R. had his stroke just after the 1980 all star game but he was having symptoms long before. He kept complaining of numbness and other problems but the Astros management thought he was "dogging" it. The saddest part of the whole thing is that the stroke could have been prevented.

JR was a premier pitcher. If I recall correctly, he was having severe pains in his upper shoulder/neck area that the team physician was treating as a muscle problem.....but turned out to be a blood clot. Hope all turns out well for him, and that he makes a few more dineros. Regards.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

As a Dodger fan in the 70's I will never forget JR Richard because he always pitched well against my team!
Disliked him then but learned to respect him for being a great pitcher. Was very sad what happened to him.

Last I heard JR was living under an interstate bridge. He was one of the dominant pitchers of his era. I hope he has gotten his life under control.

    Good for you.

  • In his prime JR was awesome. John NcMullen is the reason JR crashed. I saw him pitch many many times. Saw him once pitch 12 straight balls to load bases and then throw 9 sliders to strike out the side. He had a very nasty slider. And yes, he was living under and overpass here in Houston. Our present team owner Uncle Dayton, found out about it and has since given JR a job in the Astro org.
