Gum in Topps Heritage Packs

Does Topps wrap the gum (unlike vintage cards) so it doesn't stain the cards if ones chooses to keep them sealed for years?

Comments

  • The gum is wrapped in plastic so I think they would be safe.
  • In the good old days it wasn't wrapped though, was it?

    nope
  • nope, in the good old days you would get hideous gum stains and wax stains on the back or front of cards. If you open a box with gum in it now, then sometimes you have several warped cards per pack, because the gum can sink into the cards it's touching.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

This is the gum from a 1978 Topps baseball wax box I just opened. The gum did indeed completely ruin the card it was touching AND bleeding through to the next card. Several packs I noticed small wrinkles in the cards 3 and 4 away from the gum. Even so, was a very sweet box yielding many great cards to submit image

Follow up to Gemmy's question - is the gum any good? I recall breaking packs in my youth and the gum was brittle and nasty tasting.....even after you softened it up/nearly broke a tooth by chewing it.

My Joe Namath Rookie was on the top of the pack and had a big ugly rectangular gum stain on it. Kept it until last year. I did not try to have an "expert" remove it, but when I took a fine nylon to it the card surface started to wrinkle.

I kind of miss the old gum. I like the smell of it on the cards once you open it. God, it was great being a kid.

    Yes...he is my 3rd cousin.

My great grandfather and his father were brothers.

Since we are both named John Basilone...(I'm JAB IV )....I'm proud to share his name.
  • Yeah, I remember the gum they put in the old packs circa 1970's when I was growing up like it was yesterday. Even when it was brand new it was stale and hard as a piece of dried out roof shingle. LOL

Mike - assuming you can't resist the temptation to fill your cheeks with a few of those sticks while busting, I think, basis that pile, that your new nickname be deemed "The Wad." What's old is new again.

Lucky for me I still have a couple hundred pieces of vintage 04 heritage bubble gum.

I'll be putting the 05 gum out on my table tomorrow for the little kids to take. it's not very good. The new stuff tastes like the red "Extra" gum. blech.... They have one thing in common though, they both only last about 5 minutes and you have to toss it. I'm chewing a piece of the old stuff now.. mmm...mmm...good. image

SemperFi. USMC, tour of duty: 1985-93. Learned all about your cousin when I went through Parris Island, SC back in '85. He was one of the subjects covered in our military history classes given by our DI's. A true Marine in every sense.
  • I used to love the old gum for that 1 minute of taste between cracking in btw my teeth and having a small hard rock in my mouth. I can smell the gum now and have been looking at getting back into collecting 77/78 sets that I had growing up. Sound like the Heritage has tapped into that good old feeling.

  • I can remember that old gum too (the 60's and 70's version). You had to have around 4-6 pieces to make up the equivalent of a couple of pieces of juicy fruit as they would just break into nothing after a couple of crunches. My friends and I would buy 10 or more packs at a time (remember they were only 5 cents in 1968) and open one pack each block on the walk home. Of course then you had one more piece of gum. Good times.

There are a lot of posts for 2005 Topps. It is hard to keep up if its not all centralized.
