79-S in question...Is this type 2, check and give opinion

SmittysSmittys Posts: 9,876 ✭✭✭✭✭
Remember 1979-S type 2 does not have to be total clear
it just has to have rounded ends on the Balls of the S
Type 1 is a blur with no balls clear.
We need an expert here.

Looks like a Type 2 to me. The Type 1 is basically a mushy ball with very little seperation. This one appears more distinct and similar to the 1981 Type 1.

Here's some pictures Tim posted in the flamefest thread:

Type 1 on left, Type 2 on right.

I'd say the coin in question is a Type 2.

I'm no expert in this area but isn't part of the confusion that certain year's type 2 is other year's type 1?

It's not good enough to just show the MM you also have to know the year of the coin to determine type 1 or 2.

    These are all 1979s.

The 1979 Type 2 is the same as the 1981 Type 1.

1981 Type 1 on the left, Type 2 on the right.

Thank you. Maybe this is Murphy's problem (besides others image )

He might be thinking the MM needs to look like the 1981 type 2 to be a 1979 type 2 which of course is incorrect.

    Joe.
  • I'm wanting to get to the bottom of this more than y'all, so I took a better photo of the 1979-S Proof Kennedy Half that Tim sent to me:

Here's the one that I had in the type-1 slot. I must assume it is a type-2 also:

    Murphy,

Your new image tells me that the coin you received is - without question - a Type 2. So is the one you had in your Type 1 slot.

    Murphy,

It might be a good idea to edit your original thread title and content.

Don't sweat it.It's an easy mistake to make.
  • Think I'll visit Louisville Numismatic Exchange in the morning and look for a type-1 Kennedy and apologize to one of their salesmen.

Whew! Glad everyone agreed it was a Type 2. I did accidentally send out a Type 1 recently, so I had thought another one had gotten into my box. I now always double check them before they go out.

In Lincolns the 1979S type 1 is actually tougher to locate than the type 2. Just thought to add something to the conversation. I have no idea which is harder to acquire in the Kennedy series.
