For those of you that follow this VAM market, here are some recent events.
There is a fierce on-going 1921-D set competition, as listed on Rob Joyce's web site. Rob will soon be publishing another set update,
the last being in December. It's interesting to note the "California" set is also listed among several of the finest PCGS Morgan sets.
For those that are familiar with PCGS Registry Sets, you know who "California" is. Besides "California", several well-known vammers
are building sets and are actively looking for these coins. It's my opinion that 21-D vams are becoming more mainstream and
popular every day. Recent prices increases on common 1921-D Morgans reflect that. For example certified PCGS MS64 coins used to go for
$90-$100 back in 2003. Now $140 is more the norm.
Recently, I was able to sell several of the tougher 1921-D vams to a veteran VAM collector. Only one was certifed, the
remainder were RAW coins, grading AU/XF and one was even cleaned. The average price I received was $125 per coin.
Not bad, considering common AU/XF coins cost between $8 and $20. I can't image what these coins would have been worth in
Mint State.
It's inevitable with this kind of demand that prices will keep rising. In general, these coins are getting tougher and tougher
to find. For those folks that enjoy vams like I do, 21-D coins are well worth the chase. So check your 21-D coins, post photos and
get a free attribution. Because you never know...
