set rankings on psa

How come a set that is 98% complete is ranked over one that is 100% complete. The incomplete set has a better GPA, but shouldn't having a complete set matter more?
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

Not necessarily. It is all the weighted score.

You can have a completed set of all PSA 7s, but rank below a partially completed set with all PSA 8s and 9s.

It's a simple math formula (but not simple enough for me
to try and explain here) that was developed in an attempt
to compare sets of different completion percentages.
To give you an obvious example, ask yourself if you would
    rather have
    (1) a 1952 Topps baseball partial set that was all
graded in PSA 8's and although 10 cards were still missing
for completion, it DID include Mantle, Mays, and all the other
    big names or
    (2) a totally 100% complete set from the same year but all
cards were graded PSA 2's and 3's.
As far as value, impressiveness, etc., example 1 is the clear
winner so the fact that example 2 is a complete set does
    nothing to offset it's inferiority.

I just noticed a very good explanation of calculating
set GPA's and rankings from Wolfbear over on the
Sports Card & Memorabilia Forum on a thread titled
    "Weighted GPA, Set rating.."
Go over and check it out.
    Great work Wolfbear.

yeah a partial PSA 10 set would be much better than a complete PSA 3 set. However, isn't the PSA 3 an actual set, I think the complete set should rank higher, even it's significantly lower. It takes more patience, money and will power to finish a set, sometimes one that even grades out lower. Guess I am in the miniority on this one.

It takes less patience, money and will power to finish the set in PSA 3.......................................Need less to say finsihing a set in ANY condition is still quite an accomplishment.

ok a PSA 10 set is going to be higher. Some sets from the 1930's are hard to finish in PSA 3 though. For those years I would think a 10 would be impossible. Mostly, I don't like having a near set lying around for too long. Either I sell it or finish it. Of course when finished it goes into a box and I rarely look at it again anyway. Maybe I should buy some albums.
