It's been said that the mint never sent them out sealed and that there is no such thing, technically, as an unopened set. Is that the case for this year as well.

Sorry DNAdave you're thinking of mint sets, proof sets were sealed, i opened more than one
box from the mint unopened to find all the sets sealed.

    Good information, thanks.

I have a similar question about 1976 3-coin silver sets. I have one in a red env. and another in an envelope with a design (can't remember exactly what design right now).

Do you think you'll ever open them?

    Maybe the envelopes are counterfeit??????????????????????????????????

  • A while back smoeone on here allowed that there were after market envelopes made that you could get and seal yourself.

I'd bet at least one of your sets has been looked at by smoebody.

BTW,I've never seen the middle one.

I'll take that bet, all these are from unopened boxes direct from the mint,
I bought over 200 sets from this guy so I know they're all orginal and
    mint sealed.
    But that's not important,
I just thought it was weird that 3 different style envolopes
    were used in one year.
  • Oh,I had just ass-u-me'd that they came from ebay where I have'nt had any luck on these.image

    Smittys,

Did you watch these sets come out of the unopened box?

    wjd283,

The middle one is legit. It'll also have corrugated cardboard inserts.

    Russ,
I opened the box for the first time, it was sealed mailer box with
a sixty four cent registered label, that how I knew the ones without
a date on them are 1957, all three came from different sealed mailing boxes
guess I should have saved them.
I do remember selling 100 @ 13.50 each to a big dealer up here,
he said there was no premium for unopened, wish I had seen what
they do on ebay, and Yahoo

I have over 1000 Mint Sealed 1957's, in various envelopes as you have shown. Plus, here's another type of envelope. It is grey in color. I purchased several hundred in these grey envelopes directly from the US Mint in 1957, and have never opened most of them. The ones I did open are really nice. I packaged them in groups of 10 sets. Since I got them early in the year, I wrote the note about "early strikes" on them. One of these days, I'm going to open the rest.

I should add that the ones in the grey envelopes have corregated cardboard inserts.
