75 Topps Baseball guys...Help me out

Ok Guys, I'd like to complete the '75 baseball set in PSA 8 only. No need for anything higher, just 8. What do you think the total cost would be for the entire set? I know these babies have taken a beating lately, but just how low could it be done? 660 cards at an average of $4.00 per card would be $2640.00, $5.00 per card would be $3300.00, $6.00 per card would be $3960.00. What’s your thoughts? I would attempt to pick up the cards already graded. I'm not interested in submitting raw for this set.

  • Ken,
I think this is a great set and a great time to go after it.
    However,
I think your total may be a little higher. The top 20 cards or so in SMR will be over a thousand and that will translate to about $2 a card. The remainder of the listed cards will be probably around another $1 per card. So even if you can get commons at $4 per, that would total about $7. If you throw in a few harder commons and shipping and the like, I think you will end up over $5K. At that price, it still seems like a bargain.

  • Fuzz,

I agree with your thinking. The shipping can be a real big problem if you start picking off one and two cards at a time on ebay. Those $3.00 and $4.00 commons become $6.00 and $7.00 commons if your not careful. At $7.00 per card, I may want to re-think the submitting idea. I saw some really nice raw at the last Chicago show. Save them up for a $5.00 special and maybe the average could come down a bit.

$10 per card...there is just no way you could save enough on commons to make up for the stars and low pops.

probably around 10k when its said and done

You could probably get 400 of the cards at an average of under $6 dlvd, especially if you jump on those big lots that are offered from time to time. DSL has a lot of 139 for about $3 per card right now. But the rest of the cards won't be had for $6 unless you're really lucky and strike at the right time. Some of these cards just don't appear on ebay very frequently at all, and when they do there are bidders old and new who are going for them. Then there are the stars. Ryans go for $80-100 depending on condition. Bretts are back up over $120 regularly for a centered one. Younts are under $75. A nice Aaron goes for about $80-90. Roses and Carters are about $40. Jim Rice is never sold under $35. Etc. I'm coming up on my 3 years anniversary and I'm down to about 45 cards. I've never had any luck finding good raw cards, so I'm ebay only, and some cards just never come around. At this point I'll be glad if I finish before New Year's, even if I break my self-imposed spending limit. I will only spend so many dollars per weight point. This keeps me on a budget but it means I've lost out on some tough cards recently. The nicest Tanana I've seen went for $40 or $50 recently. I had bid $35, which is way over my limit for a "common" card. I will end up at under $10 per card on average, though, as I have taken advantage of troughs in the market.

But populations are going up and a top-20 set was broken up recently. You never know when DSL or littledevildog or sirius is going to list 300 cards and let you fill in the holes.

  • I have bulit some of those 2 and 3 year sets. My '74 set took over 2 years. And yes, I can tell you, the POOF is fun!!!! for a change. Although that last 10% is likely to take a very long time. I'm not taking this set as serious as my others. This is just for fun and to see how cheep I can do it. Less than $1700.00 in the first 55% leaves a lot of room to get the more expensive cards.

I can't wait to get my hands on those cards. The COLORS!!! I hope my '74's don't complain about being in the same room.

Is it a bad sign when your cards start talking to you?

  • Just an update for you 75 guys. I am now at 72.27% and have a total of $2560.84 including all shipping costs in the set. I have about 1/3 of the SMR cards including the Brett, Rose, Seaver, Palmer and Schmidt. How low do you think it can go now? I think I can do it for under 4K now for sure. There seems to be an endless supply of these cards. I know this is not good news for the dealers, but this is a great time to put the set together.

  • Have a friend looking for a Brett. What kind of ball park are the 8's these days? What about the 9's?
    Sideplate,
Soing a great job so far. Considering that at even $5/card in super bulk grading fees, that would be 3300 so the cost of the cards is very, very low and for some very high end cards.

  • Fuzz,

The Bretts are going between 85 and 140 in PSA 8. I have no idea in PSA 9.

  • I sold a '75 Brett PSA 9 on eBay about 8 months ago for $675. Perfect centering, great color, sharp corners, edges were clean (no chips), only flaws were 4 very small fish-eye printing marks on the card. I thought it was a great sale (above SMR) at the time, of course, the pop was alot lower at that time.

Considering a Tanana just sold for $83 tonight, with 3 bidders over $40, I wouldn't start planning any final totals yet. A couple new bidders have entered the market and price is no object with them. Of course, guys like that tend to burn out sooner or later. But you're way, way ahead of my pace. I think I might still be in that price range if I had stuck with 7s, but for a long time 8s averaged $8-12. You made a good deal getting over half the set in one lump for what I'm guessing was a low price. It's great when you have the liquidity to take advantage of opportunities.

    Sideplate,

Fine job so far in your quest for the graded 75 Topps Set! I pretty much jumped into the 75 Topps Mini Set with the idea of getting all PSA 8 as well. It was such a rush collecting this great set.....I went for PSA 9's! Completed the set in PSA 8 or better in just over 6 months! You have definately come into a buyers market. When I started my set middle of last year prices were falling then, but not like now! Good Luck on finding the tougher cards. You will just have to pony up and pay a little extra on a few cards if you want to get it done sooner. If not, it could be a much longer wait. It appears you have been able to acquire many at low cost so paying a little extra for a few should not put you over your buget!

I have two 75 Topps PSA 8's (not mini's) I bought early on by accident.....#55 Bonds and #612 Carter let me know if you'd be interested in them?

sideplate , send me a pm , I bought a really sharp set last month. If you are looking for 8's , i would say 50-85% of the set would grade out psa 8/9. I submitted some of the stars for a representation of the set and here are the results below. I am not interested in breaking it up but if I win some of the stuff i am chasing in mastro then it will hit the block as it is not a high priority for me
