Ever notice how many collectors claim not to care that much about values, and yet...

Whenever somebody posts a submission with a major grade score somebody invariably asks "How much is it worth?" image

BUT, are the ones that ask "How much is it worth?" the same ones who claim not to care about values? I want some concrete facts/dirt, Russ.

Otherwise this potential "flame" thread is just a lot of "hot" airimage
  • Nope cannot say I have, I see a lot of investor/speculators who claim to be collectors make those posts.
  • I have always wondered about that myself. I just like having coins and looking at them. I enjoy talking about them. I am not an advanced collector, in fact I might not even techically be a collector (at least not yet). But it seems there are quite a few people on here who are "obsessed"? with grades and I wonder if this is because they are looking to sell most of those. If that's what you do to support you collection then cool. If you collect to keep, then why is getting coins graded so important. Or is it like catching a fish...you want proof that you caught it, even if you're throwing it back. What the hell do I know...? (that question is rhetorical)

Perhaps, I am the target of this thread, perhaps not. I have once or twice, out of curiosity, asked the value of the most recently scored AH Triple CAM Proof-70 Kennedy, out of cusiosity. It does not mean I obsess over the value of my coins.

Unlike some others who post here, I am not of unlimited means. If I buy one coin, that means I have to pass on another. Ultimately, it is important to me that I get decent value for money, but I will not pass up a premium coin that I want just because it has a premium price tag.

You weren't, but now that you mention it. image

  • I imagine that this question "how much is that worth"

is similar to "how old are you"

    Russ how old are you?

P.S. I'm waiting for the common response

No one, not even Bill Gates, has unlimited means.

The definition of Cost is what you give up to get something else.

You can buy a $100 coin, or take your family out to a nice dinner - so the cost of the coin is a nice dinner out. Everybody makes choices based on how much they value each option.

  • i think these so far hypothetical hypocritical collectors are only helping to stroke the original poster as a fellow collector, as teh OP obviously knows the worth of his new score. otherwise, what a tease with only the eyecandy, and a "looka me!". don't tell me these posters post their scores and never check replies, they care too.

i think it's honest collector curiousity and comradarie, hypothetically.

    so, no scores today? image
