Is there not enough demand to have thick cards graded?

I have a piles of SPX and SP Authentic JSY Auto cards that I would to have slabbed, but PSA cant grade them. Has anybody heard of a time table to be able to grade these?

  • I think of a lot of G/U isn't very popular, maybe that's why they don't want to bother grading them.

Too bad PSA/DNA won't allow you to submit them though, it would be nice to have the auto slabbed.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

They do slab some Spx cards, here's a 2000:

In addition, I've also had a 2003 Spx Auto/Jersey of Rex Grossman slabbed.

Yeah, those are good to go, but the Winning Materials from SPX that have the rubber team logo's are too thick.

As for the SP Authentic, I just had a 2001 Marques Tuiasosopo JSY rookie (same set for M. Vicks rookie) returned too thick on my last submission.

Its becoming the norm now for card companies to come out with these thick cards.

I bet there would be at least as much demand for thick modern cards as there is for the oddball sized vintage cards. But the question is how much does a new slab cost? I saw on these boards that it costs $10,000 to get a new die made, and that's just for regular thickness cards of different length and width. The problem with thick cards is that they aren't a regular thickness. They range from maybe 40-180 points, and having one that matches all thicknesses is where the difficulty is. You wouldn't want to put a 100-point card in a 160-point slab, it would bang around a lot. Determining what slab would fit each card would slow down processing, though I would say that's what we're paying them for. I'm sure they wouldn't mind charging an extra $2-5 per card. PSA was also supposedly redesigning the slab to improve labeling and security, but that's been a long time coming.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • I haven't heard of any new slabs for thick cards either. I'm currently doing all the SP Authentic Football sets for the Registry and it bothers me that the cards can't be included in the set. In the meantime use snap cases that hold 10 regular cards or try Ultrapro. They just came out with a magnetic holder that is specially made for thick cards.

I'm thinking that there's a lot more demand for grading GU cards than stuff like 1988 Donruss commons...
