BGS 9.5?

Can someone tell me how this card is a 9.5 and has a 9.5 for centering? I think it looks pretty far off.

    I measure 55 / 45 left to right and 60 / 40 top to bottom.

Not bad for a card with such thin borders ...

  • Yah, but that's extremely generous for BGS, particularly as far as centering goes.

He should trim the left side to match the right, resend it to BGS - and, presto: BGS 10!

This card should not qualify for a BGS 9.5. By their written standards, 55/45 is only permitted for either L/R or T/B. The other MUST be 50/50. This is surprising since 90% of my recent submissions to BGS were absolutely killed due to centering. They were picky as hell with me.

The same for trimming (see my other post). They rejected two 1968 hockey cards I sent in for "shaved edges", but I think they're wrong. I'll be sending those two cards to PSA for a second opinion shortly.

Whatever BGS may have been guilty of in the past, I can tell you right now, they are grading like real hardasses right now.

My guess is that the guy that sent them in gets "special treatment" by BGS. He is a seller on Ebay with tons of feedback and happy customers. He also sells from Dallas. Hmmm? Beckett is in Dallas too. I'm sure he has a few friends there.

Yep....just like dslsports gets special treatment from PSA. It's all about dealers who send in thousands of dollars of cards a month. To keep them coming back they got to let some cards slip. I actually think the Carter isn't that bad....I've seen FAR worse PSA 10's with centering that boggles the mind.
