To grade or not to grade.......

First off I'd like to thank Mike (stone193) very much for his help. I'll just post some of the pictures and then ask the quesitons.

This is my first time trying to scan in a card and they all came out a little fuzzy, especially around the corners and edges. Im wondering if I should send these in and if anyone wants to give me a ballpark figure on what they would grade, that would be great! I have many more I just wanted to toss a few up to get started. Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks!

Ryan

ps. I hope I did it right!

  • Ryan, I can tell the Jordan RC may get a 8, although the left edge and centering may lower it to a 7 depending on the card surface.

I'll take a stab based on what I can see and assuming there are no creases, stains, etc....

Ryan is a solid 6. Jordan is a 7, no doubt. Mantle is a 5 with a shot at a 6 if you get the right grader.

I"ll go for 6, 7 and 5. The Ryan looks a bit soft on the corners, Jordan looks pretty solid, if not a bit OC, but I"m betting it will 7nq. Mantle has a tilt cut, and besides the corners the centering on the left side upper looks pretty close- assuming the back isn't miscut I"m betting 5, 6 if you get a gift.

I would definitely grade the Jordan. Just having it in a slab is the main issue due to the number of counterfeits out there. Same idea with the Mantle - definitely grade it, because the slab will give it more credibility due to so many Mantles being tampered with. For the Ryan, either graded or raw works. Personally, I would slab it because I need it for my registry.

    Welcome to the boards.
  • Thanks for all the advice/comments so far, I hope to hear much more. I do have a question for you mudflap, or anyone who knows(which I assume is about everyone but me lol). Is a slab a bunch of cards turned in at once? Do I get some sort of break on price if I send in a bunch at once? I have quite a few I'd like to get graded but I don't want to waste my money on anything sub 6 except for any/all of my say pre 1965 cards(though i'd be nice to get better!). I also have two fleer jordans. One purchased off of ebay which I pray isnt a fake(guy has good feedback and alot of sales) and the other is the one in the scan(had it since 1988/89). The second one is in better shape as far as I can tell, so Im assuming I should send in both. Anyways, thank you to all who are helping and thanks to anyone else who responds to this.

Slab = Big piece of plastic surrounding the card; the "holder"

Flip = Little piece of paper inside the slab with the card info and grade

There are probably a bunch of other terms I'm forgetting.

You have to be a member to submit to PSA, and you get 6 gradings included for each year of membership. The only "deals" are on the monthly specials, which are hit and miss. If the special is for a card you want to get graded, awesome. 90% of the time it won't apply to you most likely. You can also submit at least 100 modern cards for the "bulk" rate of $6 per.
  • I would agree with comments made so far. Just about any Mantle, regardless of grade, increases its resale potential if you're forced to sell or want to sell them right now. And the Jordan is one of those cards that seemed to be counterfeitted to death. It too goes up in resale when graded. Plus, you have the peace of mind that the cards are real, slabbed and protected rather than fake and damage-able.

  • I'll say 6,8,5. The PSA 8 52 topps mantle in the last mastro auction was much more tilt cut than this one is.

  • 7

7- I see what appears the be chipping on the right side of the Jordan and that left edge concerns me as well. It defintly needs to be graded though, being graded in any grade is a big plus for this card.

    5 maybe a 6

    I'll go with 6, 8, 5 also.

But because a scan can hide flaws that are there and make it look like there are flaws where there are none, I wouldn't be surprised if any of these cards was plus or minus 1 from those grades.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

    6, 7, 5
  • 6, 8, 5 for me too. Good luck and welcome.
  • Ryan - 6-7
Jordan - 8 (outside shot at 9 if only defect is the border chips, but T/B centering is a little off too)
    Mantle - 4-5 (because of O/C)

Granted that there are perks in the membership, there is the eBay/PSA cobranded promo that allows anyone to submit to PSA. You just have to be a registered eBay user. Might be good to get your feet wet.

Yes I think that was the one I planned on doing, signing up and getting the 6 "free" gradings. Thanks again to everyone and maybe later today I'll scan my last 3 I'm going to send. I will also post my grades, see who was closest image.
