Obtaining world coins?

Sorry bout all the questions but At the moment I only collect Frankie Halves and Half dimes.......I always thought I was HALF ....Hehhe that was a image joke

Anyway.....If I remember right, the coin shows that I have been to, I have seen mostly American coins(maybe 1 or 2 world tables). How do you guys obtain coins other then buying through the internet?

I posted this is in sheps ship thread....didn't think it fit....so I started a new thread.

Coin shows are decent sometimes. Try your local coin dealers, or (and this is really a great place) try the weekend swap threads right here. Some Darkside stuff shows up occasionally on the "Buy, Sell and Trade" forum here, too, but not much.

Several of the regular Darksiders have links at the bottom of thier posts that will take you to thier websites where they sell coins.

Hope this helps you get started, Purple image

The major coin shows, ANA, FUN etc. usually have quite a few dealers who specialize in world coins.

  • Thanks dude! Still haven't decided where I want to go yet. It's not simplified over here like U.S. coinage is,
Type, denomination, year and MM. Kind of hard to pick something when ya like just about everything!

At first I like the Roman coinage till I saw Crusaders then about chit myself. Oh it gets even better! Then I went to Andy Bruces site and saw the hammered silver and gold.......OMG those are just so awesome. But I don't have a clue where to begin and my cash is tied up at the moment which means I can't get books right now. This forum is feeding me for right now until I get some books to read. I'll figure it out soon enough.

My local coin shop dude is kind of a penal erecti and he doesn't sell world coinage. The dude thinks that slabbing anything under 1000.00 is pointless, So that place is out. I have a feeling that the internet is the gonna be the only way.
  • I'm just getting started too Purple.

Just received my Krause Catalog the other day. Its in new condition, although a couple years old. Got it through Half.com for $9.29 including shipping.

  • Hey Ronman, What are you getting into? Specifically I mean.
  • I'm going to start out with a variety of bi-metallic coins....lots to choose from and I just like the looks of them.

It's something that the US has never minted except for the 2000 Library of Congress, but most other's do.

  • Very cool dude! Couple more weeks and I'll be flying.......uggggggh

  • I just sent $8.50 to a dealer that advertised in the back of Numismatic News, where he offered 25 world coins pre-1900. I will let you all know what I get when the shipment arrives.

    Welcome, RonMan!!

I also recommend a subscription to Krause Publishing's monthly World Coin News publication. It has great articles and lots of ads from reputable dealers.

  • collecting coins of British monarchs is a great way to go-- because from Elizabeth I through George III, you're getting coins that not only
drip with British history, but connect to early American history also. That would be coins of Elizabeth I, James I, Charles I, the Commonwealth (no monarchs), Charles II, James II, William and mary, William III, Anne, George I, George II, George III!
  • There's usually several world coin dealers at the Long Beach Show.

Speaking of which, anyone going next week?
