is the demise of Superior overexaggerated?

Just received the Pre-Long Beach catalog. Other than a few mis-placed photos, I think it is well done. Full color photos, a nice selection of coins. Compared to the January Texas Money show catalog, this is fantastic.

Three observations I have on the catalog...
    1) One lot says 1948 pcgs ms67rd Lincoln Cent. That has to be a typo and really an ms66. An ms67 might be a $5K or $10K+ coin and certainly would have a write up about it.
    2) An ms64 1961-d nickel is good enough to be in a major auction?
    3) I hate the certified FS nickels where you can see an obvious tick on the steps in the picture!

image Looked through the Catalog yesterday. I like it! Some unique coins in this sale. If your into gold how can you not like the "Peach Set"? Heres an MS69 Example, POP 1/0. Lee

Some of their very recent auctions were incredibly unprofessional. They had many listings for coins with grades like: MS58, MS30, etc.
Many misspelled words and wrong photos. The material might be great but they are certainly not at the top of their game. I would never
    consign to them.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Yep, they made a few mistakes. But, I won an auction from them over 2 years ago and they send me their catalogs for every upcoming auction free of charge. Since the other auction companies want to charge $50 a catalog regardless to how much money I send them, I think I can overlook a few typos. Hopefully, I'll continue to win a few of their auctions as well.

    Ken,
It sounds like you're on somebody's black list if you've spent serious money at B&M, ANR, and/or Heritage and they aren't sending you catalogs. I've never won a single item at B&M and only one item from ANR and yet I've been receiving their catalogs for the last year.

I do a lot of business with Heritage so I've been receiving their catalogs for some time.

Shamika: Thanks for the info. I think I'll give Heritage a call and see what's going on.

  • I can say I've bought a roll of 1878-S Morgans from them in an auction in January of last year. It was listed as an AU-BU roll and for the most part, they were, although some of them looked to have been lightly cleaned. I've been receiving catalogues from them ever since. There was one salesman that kept calling me afterwards either trying to sell me big dollar coins or trying to convince me to consign my coins. I tried to explain to him about my VAM collecting but he didn't have a clue. I do have a couple of bids in on there upcoming Pre Long Beach auction. These are types I wouldn't normally buy but they are cool looking that might be bought on the cheap (I hope).

I already receive too many auction catalogs and have little time or interest in reading theirs.
