Has anyone experienced a USPS registered, insured package becoming lost?

How common is it for a registered, insured package sent via the USPS to become lost? How long does the process take to make an insurance claim? I sent something via this method, and it has been over 8 days and it still has not arrived at its destination (mailed from the East Coast to the West Coast). Any thoughts?

Give it more time. USPS should also be able to track it for you. I would be curious at this time, but wouldn't really start worrying until a full 2 weeks has gone by.

Do not panic yet... I sent a package the 26th of Jan to PCGS, It arrived on the 4th and there was no stop along the way notification like I got with priority mail. You would have to wait 30 days to make a claim if it ended up lost. And it would take that long at least for the insurance payment. But you could end up like me; PCGS at this point claims they do not have it! I am still waiting to hear back but no contact since Friday. Patience I keep saying, Patience!

I'll echo tmot99's remarks. Registered mail typically runs slower than 1st class due to all the hand receipts & other controls. I've had registered packages take up to two weeks to get from the East to west coast. Most of time it doesn't take quite that long, but some times are better than others...

Agreed, it needs more time, USPS cvan be and often is, very slow with registered mail.

Should it be lost you can fill a form out for whatever it was insured for I believe within a week.....

    I betcha it shows up...

    Yes,

We were contacted by the USPS telling us the package was stolen. They still made us wait 30 days to file a claim and have the recipient sign the paperwork saying it never showed up despite they knew it was gone within a week.

I am currently waiting on a shipment from ANACS that was shipped on the 10th - no package yet and the tracking number doesn't show up on the USPS system yet. I guess I'll just keep waiting too....image

I recently had a gorgeous 55-D $5 held up for 16 days in USPS Registered Mail. It was purchased for me by a friend at the Heritage FUN sale. I did not want my money back--I just wanted the coin. When I finally received it, it was well worth the wait. image

It often takes 7-8 days for my registered packages to reach California from Michigan.

I wouldn't be worried quite yet.

  • I had two coins in a year the USPS lost. Both were insured and tracking information proved the sellers sent them, but the USPS never found them. image

I was re-imbursed by the Post Office but would have rather had the coins. image

I will pay the insurance for anything over $50- and will think carefully about sending any coin U.S.P.S that is real valuable to me for grading.

I read a post here from one of our forum members recently who sent a coin(s) out for grading and the USPS lost them somewhere. It sounded like he wasn't making too much progress with his local P.O. at the time.

  • Unfortunately, you can not buy any tracking information, at least at my Post Office, to track registered mail. You can, however, call your local Post Office and if there is anyone there with any intelligence, they can track it for you.image It did not used to be this way, but it seems that our government is into more payment for less services....so there you go.image

Visit usps.com and track using your computer.

The last time I lost an insured (not registered) package, the post office allowed an e-mail from the adressee as proof of non-delivery. Paid me on the spot !! Easy-peasy....

8 days? It's probably just now leaving your town. Worry when it has been 28 days. I've had packages take 3 weeks with Registered that take 3 days with first class. And that USPS web tracking is mostly useless for me.

  • You can file a claim for Registered mail after 15 days. First class insured mail have to wait 30days. If you sent registered mail your Registered number can be trace by the Post office web page and no Delivery Confirmation required. If the Package happen to be lost. Just fill out a form 1000 from your local Post office.
  • I have never experienced a loss sending or receiving. I have had a package or two take about a month to get to me or a buyer.

I have never heard of a USPS REGISTERED package being lost, only delayed. Insured mail is NOT treated with the same care as a registered package and I know they do sometimes get lost. Some of my cross country registered packages take two full weeks. I would not be too concerned about your registered package for a few more days, or even longer.

A couple of things. First, registered mail can be tracked just like delivery confirmation. Just go to the USPS tracking site, and punch in the full number, for example RA123456789US.

Second, I am in VA and have had registered packages take almost two weeks to southern CA, so at eight days I wouldn't start worrying.

Tracking is a joke, I had a shipment from NGC priority registered which usually
takes three days, take seven. I tried to track it everyday but it wasn't listed
anywhere, within an hour of recieving it I was able to track it, but by then it
was delivered. So what good was the tracking.
However back to your problem, give it more time.

Unless your package weighs more than 13 ounces where you must pay the priority rate, sending registered priority is a waste of money. Registered mail moves very slow, and there is no "priority" where registered mail is concerned.

Well, you've heard of one now !!! A recent REGISTERED INSURED package of mine was signed in to the Sarasota Post Office (home of NGC) and never seen again. Despite postal inspectors questioning employees twice (so I'm told) the package was never found. They finally paid the claim after about four months.

My advice, if the coins are really nice (and one of the five in my package was fantastic) don't send by mail under any circumstances ...... what do you do then ???? I really don't know.image

  • I had a registered insured package take almost 3 months. It was a $100 item.
I had the tracking number from the seller.
(he sent me a scan of it in a email, it had the postmark).
But it did not show up in the USPS database/website.
The local postal people said sending post office probably did not enter the info correctly.
I had the claim forms but was too busy to file.
It eventually showed up and the postman had a grin on his face.
Probably found it under his seat. I didn't ask.
I also had another ebay package take 13 months to get to me. Postmarked dec 2002 delivered jan 2004.
