1960 Topps football PSA 8 set

I am thinking of parting with my treasured set. Any ideas from the registry experts on the best way to sell it if I decide to let it go? I know there's auction services such as Mastro and Memory Lane for example. Or is ebay better way to go? Any help from someone who has done this before is welcome. The set is all PSA 8 with the exception of Max McGee who is a PSA 7. Currently listed on the registry under Al and Sandy's Cards.

  • That's a great set. How much are you going to be asking?

Auctions houses take a greater percentage than ebay I believe. However, people use them all the time. So I don't know. image

  • Hi Kingraider, that's part of my predicament. I haven't a clue where to start. I've never had anything of this magnitute to let go before. Don't know if I should let one of the auction companies take it and just pay the consignment and see what happens or put it on ebay or try to sell it outright. I'm trying to see if anyone has tried ebay for something like this before. I noticed a 1957 set recently sold for almost 9K with mostly PSA 8's...now that was a set!!imageI forgot my snowman last post...it's still snowing on the North Coast
  • yeah I saw the 1957 set too. I lost out on that one, although I didn't put in a strong bid. However, the 1960 set is not as scare as the 57 set, less RC, less big names, no SP( maybe there are a few, not big money though), so I wouldn't think that would be a good comparison. Guess you could put a high reserve on the set on ebay and see what happens.

Im not sure in your case I'd probably shoot for the auction house with a 60 set. I sold a nice lot 2 yrs ago but thats when the griddle was hot. Had a lot that came from wax pulled a ringo in a 9 and a few others in 9. The boys were paying me well in access of double smr even for the 8's. With the remainder going to ebay and was lucky to get smr.

Find a # in your head maybe contact the registry guys get some offers and start computing or wait for ebay to have a free listing day which they should. March they usually run a free fixed price put a reasonable price and have at it. What you dont want to do is list something normal with an extra high reserve then be back to square one of mercy of an ebay auction.

I do know that completed sets usually do very well in football at the auction houses. If you can barter someone down to 12.5 % or better in my mind would be the way to go. Breaking it up with listing fees, paypal and so on can eat up your profit. If you did go to ebay and arent a seller at that point cosign it with maybe andy madec or bbexchange. They tend to get more looks with the guys with bigger pockets where you might turn a head or two.

    Just my 2 cents

  • Check with Rick Snyder at Mint State anbout consigning it to him. He has done very well by some other guys recently and at least you might get some more info.

I think SMR is about right on this set. Looking at recent auctions on Ebay backs up that assumption.

I have the complete 1960 Packers in PSA 8 and I built about 30% of this set before I sold but the Packers.

Many common 8's sell in the $15-18 range wich is just below SMR. Brown and Unitas usually go for about %20 more than SMR.

So it balances out on a complete set. I think $3000-$3600 is reasonable for this set.

  • $3,000 sounds like a lot for a set that books for $600. Too bad SMR doesn't have complete set price listing for the "newer" sets. I think the complete set prices stop at what 57 or 58?

SMR for a complete PSA 8 1960 FB set is $3457 from a Summer 04 SMR.

  • yeah I was thinking of raw. my bad. Does SMR still list set prices? The lastest issue didn't I believe. I throw out my old SMR's, maybe I should keep them.

no it stops at a point. I just port the online guide to excel and total.

  • yeah that's probably as good a way as any. Seems like the complete set price isn't really taking into consideration what it takes to buy each card separately.
