I will be in San Antonio this weekend. Can anyone recommend a coin shop (especially near the river walk)? A visit to a coin shop sure would enhance my weekend.
I do not remeber the name of the shop, but when I was in San Antonio 4 years ago for NCAA hoops regional games, I hung out along the river walk. Up on street level on a corner of a busy street was a coin shop in an older (1900-1950) era stone building. Spent about a half an hour looking and picked out a 1961 proof set in a capital holder that had a cameo nickel. Cost $10.00. Still have the nickel. As I recall the shop had a large selection of items to look through in multiple glass cases. It seems like the shop had been there for a long time and I suspect it is still there today.
Enjoy the river walk. Lots of good restaurants. I expect that during the daytime summer heat, the riverwalk it the only place in town with much pedestrian traffic. When I was there for college hoops the river walk was the happening place in the evening/nightime hours.
That one is Royalty Coins. It is very close to the Alamo (I think just northwest). If you see the Ripleys Museum, face the museum and the shop is maybe 100-200 yards to your right, across 1 street. I bought my MS65 Peace dollar from them for $75 at a show a few years back.
There is another shop--Lone Star I think--with nice material. They are near San Pedro (a major north south road through the city) on the north side of the city. Not walking distance from downtown. One of the workers or owner is very well known for discovering some famous Indian Head Nickel Error.
Another shop is in a strip mall on the North East Side of town. I think it is alamo heights coin shop. Lots of raw stuff, mostly 20th century, a few nicer. Also has currency, some bottles and WWII uniform parts/insignia. The owner's wife was one of my kids teachers for a year.
I got a call from a lady in San Antonio about the WI state quarter varieties. They are showing up there, but the dealers have banded together and are offering only $35! Is that just bad ethics or something criminal?
Bring your nickels you dont want... and I'll drive you to the coin shops in town! lol
The best is on the outskirts of town... called Ruffers Coins... Royalty Coins, IMHO, isn't the best and had significant negative attitudes everytime I walked in their door.

It's true, a few people have found the WS variety in town. Lone Star was offering $50 for average circ. & (I think) $150 for BU. I'll be at the show on the 26th.
Lone Star has always been fair with me.

Also, if you have time check out the Alamo.
