Interesting find in change today...

a 1918d lincoln cent, i would say in good, the eight is quite worn, and i first thought was that it might be a 14d. nice find anyway!

  • Great find...the best I have found was in the 1940's......
  • I always wonder if it is one I spent. I used to have many worn common date wheaties that I set free into circulation. There may be some dateless buffs out there as well so keep looking. image

I found some nice coins too in twelve rolls of quarters. There were numerous unc
states issues all the way back to NJ. It looks like someone or the fed did some vault
cleaning. There were also a couple real nice '93 and '94 issues in AU+. Best was an
'85-P small bust. This is a pretty dramatic variety which is easiest to see in the distance
from the bottom of the "E" in "LIBERTY" to Washington's head; it is greater on the small
bust. This is the third or fourth one I've found in a year.

The oldest lincoln cent I ever found in change was 1930 and that was back in 1977 when my father picked up $100 in cents for me to search through. My fingers still stink. image

A number of years ago [80's-90's, I do not remember] I finished a court hearing and stopped for food at a courthouse snackshop. When I paid for the food and received my change, one of the cents was a 1912-S in Fine condition. One of my better circulation finds.

One of the best circulation finds [more like winning a jackpot] I had was when I was in 10th grade. November or December, 1971. Finished basketball practice at 6:00 p.m. and called my parents at a payphone in the school lobby to have them come pick me up. After placing the call and hanging up the receiver, bingo, the phone went nuts and started dumping quarters, dimes and nickels out of the coin return slot. Coins were rolling all over the lobby of the school. No one else was around, so I figured that I should do my part to "clean up" my school. After picking up all of the coins, stuffing them in my pockets and returning home, I counted my loot and had more than $11.00 in change. Quite a return on my 10 cent phone call [that what a phone call from a public phone cost in 1971].

BTW, has any forum member 25 years old or less ever made a phone call from a public phone?
  • A year ago, I found a 1924 cent in change from the Subway down the street from where I live.

Three years ago, I found a 1951-D silver Washington 25c in change in a Boston cafe.

Keep looking. I just took a bag of change to the bank. In it were about 20 to 30 Lincoln cents from 09 to 40. They were really bad. Wear wise almost gone, dates about the only thing visable. some had dents, bends, scratches, etc. I've been saving the wheats for to many years and time to get rid of the ones that no one should want.
I know a dealer that told me he does the same thing once in a while and always wonders what people think when they find them.

I'm going to put some wheats in circulation soon. Hope they find their way to some kids who will find it fascinating.
  • A couple years ago I was having lunch with some coworkers and when the waitress dropped my change on the table I reckognized that special clink of silver. Yup, a 1948 25c in XF. Still have it.

My brother-in-law outdid me. He works at a truck stop and one day this goon comes in and buys a carton of cigs with a roll of quarters. My brother-in-law informed the "gentleman" that the coins were silver. His response? "I don't care, I want the cigs." Then entire roll was silver quarters!
