Unopened or Ebay for registry??

I am just starting out in a couple of registries and was wondering which is the better plan of action to try to get psa 9's and 10's for the set registries.

1. the first plan is just to buy 9' s aqnd 10's from e-bay, can be costly but at least you know you are getting a 9 or 10 allready graded.

2. buy unopened boxes and or sets from bbexchange or other trusted unopened dealers, Send in the best of the bunch.

I am curious if anyone has on an approximate % basis the number of 9 and 10's pulled from an unopened box. I realized this would vary, especially with 10's.

    2 questions:
What sets are you talking about?
Which scheme seems like more fun to you?

  • what years are you talking about? The older you get with wax, the worse off with pulling 10's or 9's. Wax/gum stains, grooves due to gum, boxes been thrown around dinging corners. I would say buy them ebay, but maybe more recent wax would be a good gamble.

I am working right now on the 73, 75, 83 and 85 football. What is the most fun is to buy the boxes and rip open the packs, submit and hope for the best. Now, granted I don't do this with the 73's or 75's because i don't have 1500.0 - 2000 to spend on a box at one time. But the eighties cards which are still reasonable to buy in unopened boxes are mucho fun to do this way.

  • 85 is a tough year to find 10's. The Marino will go for a lot if it's a 10.

83 has a lot of DP stars, so wax is probably a good idea for that year.

I even have a set I bought from bbexchange, had two cards from the set grade 10. He listed the set as nm-mt. I won it or about 30 bucks so i have gotten my money back allready.

It's been my experience that approximately 10 to 15% are PSA 9/10 worthy. I just busted a 1982 Topps football cello box from BBC Exchange (he has a nice deal for $100) and ended up with a few dozen cards that I'll submit. The most common problem was centering, followed by corner dings and print marks. I am VERY picky - especially about centering - so I only pick the best of the best.

One last bit of advice - 10's are nearly impossible to get. I have only received 2 10's out of 100+ Post 72 topps cards that I have submitted (Let's say 1976 to 1985 Topps). That being said, of the cards I submit, approximately 85% are 9's. Not too bad - but the few 8's I get kill me - especially when they are stingy w/ the 10's.

For the late 70's and early 80's, your best bet is to check out four sharp corners and wait until they discount the PSA 9's down to $3 or $5. That's what I tend to do. I even picked up a PSA 10 1981 Topps fb common for $7 or $8.
