What makes a 70? Post a MS70 or PR70. Do you have one?

Have a 70? Let's see it! I don't have any but I wondered how many forum members do. I hope to get one in a submission some day.

Did you buy it or was it your own submission?

What do you think makes a 70? Grader having a happy day, completely flawless under the microscope, or a "gimme" to a really big grading customer?

It's nice to know that two of the three grading justifications you gave have no basis in reality of the coin--or fairness to the coin-submitting public at large.
  • Personally I think thats a fair question. Not a lot of people can see the difference between 69 and 70 and since there is some amount of sujectivity to grading anything is possible. I would guess that at that end of the scale, subectivity comes into play more than anywhere.

MS70 = as minted. Perfect. Period.

Any imperfection and it's something else.
  • I have over 20 pcgs ms70's and have purchased about half and submitted half. It's some mystic thing that can't be explained. If it could someone would up and corner the market..

Way to go Orie! I suspected that even under 5 or 10x magnification, a 70 is hard to tell from a 69. However, under much higher magnification it seems that a grader could find something imperfect in every coin. But maybe not - hence the 70!

I remember a while back an MS70 cent was bought back by DH/PCGS becuase it had a spot. It probably "grew" after the slabbing but it's nice to think that they stand behind the grades enough to take imperfect 70's off the market.

BTW, the "options" in my original question are just opinions I've heard in the past.
