I have rediscovered coin collecting after about thirty years of 'suspended numismatic animation!' My education
has been greatly aided by lurking on this Forum for the last eight months or so. To everyone who posts here,
I have learned a lot from you -- thank you!
I submitted my "free" Collector's Club submission to PCGS last month, and am pretty happy with the results:
1 21869089 1880-S S$1 USA MS66 Bought for $32.50 at estate auction
2 21869090 1880-S S$1 USA MS66 Ditto
3 21869091 1880-S S$1 USA MS64 Ditto
4 21869092 1880-S S$1 USA MS65 Ditto
5 21869093 1926-S S$1 USA MS62 Ouch...
6 21869094 1934 S$1 USA MS63 eBay purchase
7 21869095 1934 S$1 USA MS64 Bought for 63 money
8 21869096 1963 50C USA PR66 This looked great until I cut it out of the cellophane!
Date Received: 01/12/2005
Date Shipped: 02/04/2005
Mildly interesting story on the 1880-S Morgans: I was shown them by my hometown's most well-known coin
hoarder and collector when I was a kid. I was mesmerized by these coins, especially the proof-like ones, as
they looked awesome (especially compared to my paltry collection of beat-up circulated coins). Alas, this
gentleman passed away last year, and I went back home to attend the auction of his estate. There in a
display case were those Morgans, and I was fortunate enough to buy a few. Now if only I had bid on those
beautiful proof-like 1888s....
I hope you like the image of the coin in line 1 of my submission, taken with an Olympus C-750 digital camera and
the coaxial illumination technique that I learned about on the Forum. Again, thanks for everything!

Edited to add: Great Grades For A First Submission!
I suspect it's all downhill from here!
The date on your 1880 S looks funny to me. May be worthy of a closer look.
There are several VAM #'s of an overdate from 1879.
******
Congrats on the submissions!!
and btw, those photos are fantastic!!! good goin

Oh yeah and
wam98 -- I agree that there is extra metal (?) in the numerals of the date. I bought the VAM 'bible' and will take a closer look.
fivecents -- Actually, the hardest thing for me to adjust to in my long absence from collecting is probably 'mint-state mania,'
and how seemingly subtle differences in condition produce huge increases in a coin's value. Back in the day, didn't we have
'BU' and 'Gem BU,' and that was about it?!
lucybop -- You rock!
Cheers,
John
Be sure to look at all the vam's for that '80
Also, Welcome to the board!!!!
Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
Great story! Very nice pics. Very nice
I'm in a somewhat similar boat, returning to numismatics after a long abscence being busy with other things.
Welcome!
