What's everyone's luck in crossovers w/o cracking original slab?

I have a Clemens RC that has been graded GAI 9.5 and a Tom Brady RC that's been graded BGS 9.0. The Brady just missed being a 9.5 by .5 (10, 9, 9, 9.5 subgrades). I feel both have a chance at PSA 10, but I'm hesitant to crack them out of the original slabs. I know cracking them out will make grading easier (and rule the bias of politics), but what has everyone's ACTUAL luck been when sending them in the original slab?

  • I have heard from several that nearly every attempt to cross a GAI to a PSA without cracking results in the card coming back as trimmed.

Yeah, it's that damn black insert that they use for the border. It's makes the card look smaller than it is. How about BGS? Any negatives?
  • I actually like that black insert, just makes the slabs look better..IMHO

Well, I wouldn't mind it, but it's just too thick. It also causes a lot play and the card has a tendency to bounce around more.

Not in my experience, but M/G (min. grade not met) is pretty common when crossing GAI to PSA, and I don't think it has much to do with the card itself. I've had better than average results with SGC and even BVG (but NOT BGS).

Brian, why would you want to cross BGS 9.5 to PSA 10? Everybody knows BGS 9.5 is way better than PSA 10! (insert eye-rolling emoticon here)
  • I did this cross-over about 3 months ago, still in original slabs:

    1993 Biggio Refractor BGS 8.5 (9.5, 9.5, 10, 7.5) = PSA 9
1998 Nolan Ryan Significant Signature BGS 8.5 (raw card review) = PSA 9

I don't have a BGS 9.5. I have a 9.0 that barely missed 9.5 by only .5. Rather than re-submitting again to BGS in hopes of getting the extra .5 subgrade, I'd rather have PSA give it a go.
  • I would think that if PSA saw those two 9 subgrades that they'd be unwilling to give it a 10. That said, if the corners received a 9.5 and the centering received a 10, I would think you'd have a decent shot if you cracked it out and submitted it. I think BGS just guesses on the surface and edges grades anyways.
