Ebay -- Buyer Disregards Payment Instructions -- Opinion?

Hypothetical ---

I listed an item on Ebay, no reserve auction with specific instructions that I would only accept Paypal for payment. The auction lasts for 1 week, at no time am I contacted by anyone asking if I would accept a check or MO instead.

3 days after the auction closes, 1 buyer who bought multiple items worth $200+ emails me and asks if I would take a check instead becuase he doesn't have a Paypal account and he doesn't like Paypal.

I know the world is full of idiots, but what should I do??

I hate driving to the bank, standing in line, waiting for a teller. Then I have to make an additional trip to the PO so I can wait for his check to clear instead of being able to mail his package with those that actually read directions. It wastes my time.

If he did not comply with the terms of your auction, I believe you have all right to cancel the transaction, after notifying eBay of course.

Tell him you'll take a USPS money order. When it comes, package the items. Go to the PO and cash the MO before sending the package. As long as they deem the MO good, you'll walk out with $200 in cash, and have the package on its way.

Oh, I say that for two reasons...

1- I'd rather have a transaction just end with the items being sent
2- It's not one item, but many... that would be a pain and a lot of lost time to relist and wait again

  • Dont be so quick to jump, maybe the person is new to Ebay and doesnt even realize that anything is wrong.

I once had a guys brother call me and explain that he was in the hospital but he was sending the money The transaction took longer than it should have but strange things happen beyond our control sometimes.
  • This scenario happens over and over again with a certain segment of ebayers. Oftentimes it's bidders that did not take the time to read the terms of the auction b4 bidding. (Obvious!image

I think Jeremy's thoughts make good sense.

  • I would make him stand in line to get a postal money order!
  • Start yanking his chain and see how fast he leaves you with negative feedback. If he disregarded the payment option then he might disregard you too.

He has a feedback of 180 with no negs and has bought from other board members before.

Like Jeremy said, USPS money order. Otherwise, file unpaid item reports on the items and relist.

    Ok TPN,

    Here's what you do....

Have him send ME the checks/MO. I will cash. Once I know they are good, I will send you 60cents on the dollar via paypal.

That way, everyone's happy, right? image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • What is wrong with a deposit using an ATM. There has not been a nedd to go to a teller for 15 years.

Take the check. This scenario happens every so often...but not with enough frequency to start undoing completed auctions. If it really is a problem for you depositing a check (and I'm not sure I understand why that is so inconvenient with ATM's and drivethroughs) and your afraid they'll do it again making your depositing life a living hell, put them on your blocked bidder list. I'll take the winning bidder who pays the wrong way, over the ones that don't pay at all, any day of the week!

  • Have him just send you cash Express Mail
If it gets lost he's out .. lesson learned
If it gets to you I guess you save some PayPal fees

Take the check. Mail it to your bank. Wait until it clears and ship the coins. Even saves Paypal fees.
  • I don't have paypal.
I did buy from a guy once that had this in his auction, but I asked him if he'd take a check before I bid.
For the most part, I simply ignore auctions with this type of restriction.
You're losing bids because of this.

    Request a MO.

The bright side is you saved on Paypal fees. $5.80 for a $200 transaction.
