You could sell it to a forum member in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum. Or take it to a coin dealer. Show us a picture of it image

By the way, welcome to the forums!

  • Keep it, play hard to get. There are a lot of rich guys on here who will keep offering more and more the longer you keep them at arm's length. You aren't an ex-wife, are you?

I thought that J-212 was round. I am glad to see my recollection confirmed by the photo....

P.S.: More seriously, I concur with Boiler78; might a closer picture be available?

Is the color of the 212 true or is it more tan in real life?
  • Im not sure what your asking. lack of knowledged of it looks to be bronze in color. can you educate me more to what your asking please. i would be glad to answer any questions. thanks dave

The 212 is supposed to be copper-nickel (about 88-12). The pix make it look more orangy (or copper looking). As some 1858 small cent patterns were struck in copper or bronze, it is theoretically possible that this was as well.. If it were the case, the coin would be significantly more valuable. However, the only way to be certain is by SEM-EDX testing (Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive x-Ray), which is expensive, but non-invasive.

  • i think the j-212 color looks fine, the rub is atributing it to the more common p-263 "broad bust point" with about 100 pieces made (150 years ago still!), or the very rare p-265 "narrow/pointed bust point" (also called "type of '59") with only 5-10 pieces struck.

in my very novice opinion, shuffling back and froth from pics of each,.. i'd say that is the "broad bust point" piece.

still, a great piece, don't let go without knowing for sure what it's worth. (check past auction sales, ask around.)

    << <i>i think the j-212 color looks fine >>

I'm not saying the color looks fake or recolored. I'm saying it looks bronze/coppery. If it were found to be one or the other, this would be quite a discovery piece.
  • Well... i did do a folor fix in my photo shop program, thought it would make it look clearer with just auto options, i will retake them here and not adjust color on it this time.

  • here it is untouched just cropping

    thanks dave....

It's tough to tell, because lighting can change the look so easily. It looks coppery to me, but it may be due to the lighting.

Well the aren't very good, but they are good enough to identify the coin and to definitely know that it is NOT a head of 95. Not even close. The heads of 95 are S-70 through 72. Yours is an S-44, right in the middle of the heads of 94. It's a common variety, I have one and yours would be a big upgrade but I'm afraid it would probably be out of my range.

    Dave,

How much are you looking to get for the 1794?
I might be a buyer if Conder passes...
