im new and need help.

I’ve inherited a coin that was graded pr64 and its an 1858 J-212 type P1c Indian penny. I am trying to figure out its worth and possible how to sell it. It is not the only coin in my collection just the most elusive. I can’t find information on it anywhere. It has the standard 1858 face on it on the obverse, but on the reverse it has a Reith and shield, more seemingly common to a 1859 I believe. And that eludes me. So I figured to join this message board and maybe get some help on identification.

Thanks Dave

It's probably worth somewhere between $1250 and $1500, depending in great part on eye appeal. Here's a link for info. If it's a low date, maybe $2500+.

    J-212

Edited to add: Can you post pix?
  • I will try to post a pic asap . i can see that it does look to e a pattern coin, thats truely cool PCGS does have it graded as PR64 does that help any?

Lucky you. You inhertited something truly rare and uncommon. Keep it. Don't take the first offer out the door. Research first

  • that is a rare pattern cent, from a set of 12 patterns made that year and sold as a set. 100 estimated set were made/restruck in 1858/59.

the guy to ask about this would be Rick Snow, a member here, and i hope he doesn't mind if i link his site Eagle Eye Rare Coins (pattern inventory) . oddly enough the pattern cent you mention is detailed in this, my only specific coin book.

depending on the rarity of that piece in PR64, i'd say it might range anywhere from $3,000-$5,000, or more!

check out that site, and perhaps if you edit the title of this post to "1858 Patten IHC - Help", Rick might pop in.

    on that page he is selling a J-211 and a J-213, for $5k and $8k, graded PR64 and PR65.

DO NOT SELL THIS COIN QUICKLY!! or without talking to someone with detailed knowledge of the exact coin.

*edit* guess it would also depend on whether the date variety were the common one or the rare variety of "only 12 known".

  • indeed, you will need to have the coin looked at by someone who can attribute it further than simply J-212, as there are two cents both given this number, P-263 and P-265, (Broad Bust point vs. Narrow bust point). the first being more common with 100-125 known pieces, while the later is only estimated to have a run of 5-10 strikes.

*big* diff in price there, but still, either is worth a pretty penny as a pattern. though if not the rarer type, i'd have to revise my $3-5k+ estimate down by half. image

    pics?
