How far in advance is too far to start planning your next set? And what next?

I still have 10 coins to go for each of my two primary sets. I estimate that these will realistically take the next two or three years to complete. Even if I rush it, I do not see finishing either for another 12-18 months. Decent coins are just not around (or affordable image ). I am already in the planning stages for what to do next. Half the fun of collecting, for me, is the anticpation of what comes next.

What are you planning to collect NEXT? And how long before you will start?

Unfotunately, no plans to collect something next, seeing that I have a long way to go on my primary set of interest. I am trying to put together a type set as I go along.

  • Hello all,

Even though I need 2 more coins to finish my current set, I'm already thinking about my next collection: Lincoln cents.

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...

I used to work on multiple sets at a time, sometimes receiving something in the mail almost every day of the week. The pace was too frenetic and now I do the opposite. I'm working on one set, and if I receive one coin a month, it's a lot. I much prefer this approach. Do I miss getting more coins? No, not really. I find this board and seeing the coins the rest of you buy and post here sufficiently entertaining (and easier on the wallet)

What next? Not sure. May review some completed sets and look at replacing select coins in them. Or, may start something new. If I start something new, I'm leaning towards Bust Halves (specializing in Accented Hair and down leaf varieties image )

    Tom,
I already have a set of Roosies (up to '64). Once I finish the Draped Bust Dimes, I'll have a complete set of dimes from 1796 to 1964.

Working on Lincolns, Jeffersons, and clad quaters and dimes. Next will be Indian Head Cents, Buffalo Nickels, and Kennedy Halves. Already have about 9 IHC's and most Buffalo nickels 1928-1938 as a start (although sometimes I sell these if I need the money for Lincolns). Once I am near done IHCs and Buffalo Nickels (a very long long way away) I'll start on the silver coins 1916-1964.

I'm a long way from completing any set. My collecting habits have been changing slowly lately and I have been buying more MS high grade brown copper.

  • It's never too far in advance. Sometimes picking up the right coin is a once in a 2-3 year opportunity. Especially with patterns and choice DMPLs. Do I need to even mention early original copper?!!

    RYK,

Interesting post, partly because the timing coincides with my own deliberation. I'm about three months away from starting a new indulgence. I'm pondering meaty Barber halves in xf/au, and beginning a Peace dollar collection in 4. That series will help me accomplish a larger goal of complete dollar coins 1900-date. I'll limit myself to $500-$800 per mo, so it'll take a few years, which I see as the minimum length of time required to select coins I like anyway (maybe much longer).

IMHO, it's never too late to get the ball rolling..., all depending on how much of a budget you have.
I'm lacking but one date to close out a C-mint $5 collection (50-C)..., but I've already been looking at the $2 1/2 series... started on that already. This kind of stuff is too difficult to come by regularly in decent shape/condition, so if a nice 2 1/2-C presents itself before that last $5-C comes along, the $2 1/2 will join the fold first.

Here is what I am thinking:

I will finish my New Orleans $10 and Dahlonega $5 sets in the next two to three years. I like the $5 denomination the best of the coronet gold coins. I like the size, the availability of circulated coins (XF/AU), and the look. My next series will be either New Orleans No Motto $5's or Carson City $5's. When I decide which, I will start picking off nice XF coins when I see them, especially if any of the tougher dates turns up.

It's too far in advance if you begin the "next" set without finishing the one your working on now.
