Hairlines & A Rare Coin

Would you buy a fairly expensive coin, $700, that is hairlined? Only two are known, this one is uncirculated

Hairlines really bother me, but on a coin such as this, are they all that bad?
I would appreciate any opinions

It would depend on how distracting the hairlines were (if they didn't ruin the look of the coin, then yes).

  • For me, this is an impossible to answer question w/o being able to see the coin. Sure it's rare, but if the hairlines are really distracting, I'd pass on the coin (or spend the rest of the time that I own the coin staring at the hairlines and not the coin!).

With only two known, hairlines wouldn't bother me in the least.

  • Sure, I'd do it if its only one of two.

It all depends on the goal of the collection. I have some very scarce if not outright rare dates that have hairlines. In absence of better examples that I probably will never see let alone handle, I have no problem with them. Condition doesn't matter as much when a coin is so rare. By the sound of your collecting goal, you would be happy to have the piece, epsecially knowing the probability of ever seeing one again.

Show me a better example for sale and I'll buy it

What he said ! With only 2 known I'd say ya don't have much of a choice.
    knowledge ........ share it
  • The Germania in my sig is hairlined on the fields. I don't mind it so much because in a certain light you can't tell and because I haven't seen another one like it.
  • In such a case, beggars can't be choosers!! If the other becomes available and is nicer, then buy it and sell this one. If not, you have the best existing example -- and no museum can say that!!!

  • No one can tell me the mintage of my Germania medal, Askari. I've even emailed Germany and have gotten nothing.
But someone told me about another Oertel medal and the mintage was as low as 68. I think I'll make due with the airlines.
  • You either have a hole in your collection or not. With only two examples known it doesn't seem like that big an issue to me, after all when will the other one come available and could you afford it if it does?

With Germany having lost so many records during WWII, I'm not surprised at the lack of info. Even that aside, mintage records appear to be exceptionally hard to come by -- and sometimes they weren't kept at all.

  • See if he will send on approval, the hairlines might not be that bad.
