Apparently people like this set

I found this 1977 Topps Cloth Set on Ebay and I figured I would jump into grading cards from this set. I've never bought or sold any of these so I am new at them. I did a completed auctions search and noticed the last set sold for about $100. This set looked a little nicer so I put a bid of $165. I couldn't believe my eyes when I noticed that 3 people outbid me. I thought I'd win it for sure going that much over the last price. Is this a normal price for a set or did the top guy pay too much? I'd like to pick up a nice set in the future, I'm just wondering what's a reasonable price to pay for a mint set.

  • Steve,

The 77 Topps Cloth sticker Nolan Ryan sells for $25-35 in PSA 8, $75-110 in PSA 9, and 200+ in PSA 10. With all the other HOF's and Stars I would have thought bids in the $200-300 or higher would be the
norm for a complete "mint" set. I haven't tracked the Rose's lately but they used to do pretty well also. The Wax boxes have gone for up to $250.

I am working on this small set on the Registry - nice group of HOF's, somewhat easy to find, hard to find in high grade. I sold my set from back in the 70's a few years ago on Ebay (raw, of course) for a mere $75.00, and I wish I had it back today. Lots of 9's and 10's were in there I'm sure. I would actually love to find a wax box from this issue, haven't seen one in ages.

I saw a wax box about a year ago and the guy was asking $300. I thought it was over priced.
  • I noticed a nice raw set on ebay back in December and the seller had a "I'm not going to give this away" in his listing with a reserve. Several last minute bids came in and pushed the price to $150-$155, but it still didn't meet the reserve. Don't know what he was looking to get, but it seemed to get serious interest. I would like to have it....I love oddball stuff!

One thing about this set, though - the cloth frays quite easily around the edges, making it very condition sensitive. I would hesitate to buy a set online unless I could see really sharp scans, or I had return privileges.

Update to this post. I just won this set on Ebay. Needless to say I bid a lot more than I won it for. I'm glad now that I didn't win that other set. I saved myself about $75 on this one. From the scan provided, it looks like all the stars are centered decently. Now I just hope the corners are nice. It's really amazing that people don't use better scans. Considering how much less this set sold for than the first one, the seller could have bought a nice scanner for close ups of the cards. One thing for sure, when selling on ebay, use the best equipment possible. They will pay for themselves many times over.
  • Nice going Steve. Let us know how the cards turn out--hope all goes well for you.
