Trade Dollar - Tonights Guess the Grade- Grade Posted

Was shooting some coin pics this weekend of some coins I brought home from the safe deposit box. I found this dirty old Trade Dollar in a box of Morgans. We don't see too many of these on the forum so let's play guess the grade. It resides in an ANACS holder if that helps.

    It's undergraded.

I will take a WAG. There appears to be too much wear (? weak strike) for the amount of luster/shine. I will guess AU details Net XF-40 (cleaned/whizzed).

Typical strike for a Type I coin. Too much design opposite the eagle's leg and claw.

    Net 45. Old cleaning. JMO

I would have to go with AU cleaned. Don't know what they would call the net grade.

Is that a weak "S" on the reverse, or did someone try to take it off?

Okay, okay. Despite the weak strike, the luster looks quite natural. MS-63.

58-62 lots of luster left, but I've only got a couple to compare it to. Nice coin, a trip to NCS maybe?

    A very weak "S"

Here's some additional info / opinion.

Don't worry about net grades. No net grade on this dollar.

I do believe some gunky coating was removed with acetone leaving some gunk in the details. But no serious hairlines on the surfaces typical of a harsh cleaning.
  • Very weak strike, AU58

  • I know very little about Trade Dollars and very few are posted here so I am guessing I have a lot of company. I'm also not the best photographer so I thought this would be interesting. Like I said in the opening, this is a dirty old Trade Dollar. I can only imagine how this coin developed it's dirty look. As an ex-smoker, my guess is It spent many years in a smoking lounge as it has the appearance of being coated in tar and nicotine. It looks to have since been dipped in acetone but the acetone was unable to get the tar out of the devices.

Anacs graded it MS60, which to me seems to be a net grade as the fields are really quite clean and the luster is intact, but it does have a lot of dirt (I'll call it character). I do detect a little rub but that may be consistent with cabinet friction which I understand is often forgiven. As noted it is a very weak strike, but TDN noted that is somewhat typical. I think I paid AU-UNC money for it, but that was at least five years ago.

    Thanks for playing.

    Jon,

The first pic is sort of a fooler. It appears on my monitor to have hairlines from 1:00 to 7:00 in both fields, hence my net grade, but since it has not been cleaned, I see no wear or luster break on the high points. I'll change my answer to MS63. The dirt in the devices helps fool my eye. Thanks for the education.

I was late posting, but again, thanks. image

The coin presents itself as a gem. With that said, any number of things could have been done to it that I cannot detect [especially off a picture]. However, if not hairlined then it has the look of an MS63 or better coin. I think you did well and certainly might take a chance on resubmitting the coin before selling it.

MS60 is a grade rarely used by the major services anymore.
