Brazilian Counterfeits?

I was going through a dealer's list, looking for Brazilian crowns. One item was an 1817B 960 Reis. Kraus does not list such a date for this coin. Anyone know if there are counterfeits around?

Lots of them. Also, Bahia mint coins were sometimes crudely struck, so that's not necessarily an indication of a fake. Are you sure it's a B mintmark and not an R?

Haven't seen a photo. but "lustrous AU" from that long ago always makes me a tad nervous, unless I know the dealer fairly well.

If he's calling it a "lustrous AU," I'd be more worried about the coin being cleaned or dipped. Most coins of that age are darkly toned due to Brazil's tropical climate. Although there are some with original luster, they aren't easy to find. I will only buy a lustrous 960 reis coin if it's certified by PCGS, NGC or ANACS.

Edited to add: The 1817B does exist -- it's KM307.1
