Anyone know 1964 Topps Giants well??

I just graded out the nicest Giants cards that I have ever seen. The cards in the set were all crisp and clean. About 15 of them had the "snow", but all the rest were crisp and clean. So I decided to send in 18 of them. I thought all of the cards had a shot at a PSA 9/10 with the exception of Koufax. Please provide a link to the invoice of 566157 and 75007 zip. I got killed on them. I thought the Marichal was a lock 9 and had a more of a chance for a 10 than a 9.
Oh well I guess I could have done worse.

At least you 9'd the Cisco, it's a short print.
Its become such a crap shoot I've pretty much given up submissions and buy already graded. Let someone else roll the dice and then resubmit.

I recommend that you get one of those magnifier "loupes" (the lighted ones are best)
and get a closer look at the corners. You might also want to spoon the creases out next time.
  • I did the same thing when I started the set, but got about the same ratio of 8's to 9's. So I sold my 8's and began getting the tough 9's on ebay.

I had a couple of 6's that, upon closer look, had some markings on the edges of the cards.

Everyone thinks there is a ton of great raw out there, and maybe there is. But these cards can be foolers.

Its a great set though, keep at it!!

  • That's not a bad submission at all. Two 9's including an SP, and you pulled at least a couple of other 8's on SPs. Quite acceptable. I don't know why people think this is such an easy set (not saying you are one of them). It's not! The raw has dried up so badly that I'd say that was a decent submission.

  • Gemmint - It just seems like whenever there is talk about the Giants, people always tend to believe that there are tons of mint raw cards out there. But most submissions come back the same as 1954's and usually are worse.

Its one of those sets where the advanced perception of the grade and the actual grade received can be very different.

The "and maybe there is" was added because I just dont know if there is or isnt a great mint stash out there somewhere. But it sure has not hit PSA as, I agree, the mint gradings for this set has really dried up in the past few months.

There were cards in the recent Zardoz set break-up that might not appear on ebay for a long time.

    Great set.

    Gemmint.
I always believed it's an easy set (in relative terms) because back a few years there were stacks/bricks of untouched Giants to be had. And I have heard that Topps had plenty of surplus of these back in the day and that places like Manny's and even a few stadiums sold these in cellos through the 1970's. So it is likely that they were available from the early catalog sellers too (Fritsch, Card Collectors, Yeko).

These are the things I have heard anyways.

I do know that I picked up a stack of about 50 raw from Steve Verkman back about 5 years ago
(...of all places to find high grade image .... )

..and I graded out about half of them with nice results. None of the tougher SP's though.. of course

..and you are right, they are very nice regardless of cost or scarcity. and maybe whatever is left out there has been picked over.
  • I have well over 300 or so raw "giants"...can't say what they would grade out as, but I bought them back in 1988 or 89 from a dealer who was looking to dump them. I gave him .10 cents per card which included the Superstars, but not 1 is a SP... Most looked pristine at the time, but I've not looked at them in over 10years. I've also seen several complete sets at local shows here in Orlando. FWIW!
  • Back in the 70's, my parents and I were at a swap meet in So. Cal. We ran across a guy selling those Topps GIANTS by the boxfull. When I say by the boxfull, I'm talking about boxes approximately the size of a 5000 ct box, only deeper because the cards were standing upright. The boxes were stacked up about 4 ft off the ground. My dad decided to fork up the $5 per box, and buy me and my brother each one. I never really counted how many cards were in the box, but there were upwards of 100 of most players, some more, but relatively few SP's. Me and my brother were selling sets to people for $5 a set for a while. My brother gave up cards about 10 years ago and a few years ago I bought his collection, including a good chunk of those GIANTS he still had. I still had a good chunk of them myself, and started selling partial sets on ebay, some of which sold for $75 or so. I finally, a couple years ago, sold most of the BB portion of my collection to a St. Louis dealer, including the Giants (a couple thousand). Needless to say, that $5 gift from my dad has netted a pretty good profit over the years.

In fact, rummaging through some boxes, I recently found some more of them, mostly the stars, but including a few Skowron SP's, so I am, this morning, going to take some down to the local shop for some good old fashioned horsetrading...providing he has some decent vintage FB.

  • Do 64 Giants typically sit flat or have a curve to them? Just won two lots, separate sellers,
    each all curved.

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
  • There is no doubt that there is enormous raw out there for this set. Truck loads, you could build a house of them if you wanted image. But where is the super high end stuff? It's not out there.

They should sit flat. Ever so slight curves sometimes, but you would have to look for it.

Was anyone putting this set together in PSA/DNA autographed condition? I have picked up a Nellie Fox certified authentic as part of a larger collection I purchased. Thanks--
