3 21853570 1951-S 5C USA MS66FS Pop 16/0 Very very nice Heritage December 10, 2004 $1,840.00
4 21853571 1954-S/D 5C USA MS65 30/3 August 6, 2003 $494.50
The 51-S is such an awesome coin, Gorgous tone with super satin luster and mark free with much of the 6th step. This is PQ in a 66 holder the obverse is perfect to a "T" if it were a little brighter 67 may have been in the cards.

Super Fantastic
<< <i>Are we seeing a period where later date Jefferson business stikes are just now hitting pcgs for submissions. e.g. I see that a MS64FS 1971-D has pop 102/187 higher; 1987-D MS65FS pop 83/32 higher. non FS have low pops too. Or is it that jeffs are difficult to find in uber high grades (67 and 68)? This is in comparison to Mercs where the pops of 65+ are in the 1,000s and Morgans in 64+ are in the 10,000s and higher (jeffs being in the 100s still). >>
Thanks all for the party, I had a great day and I am very pleased, I have added three of these to my sets already. I felt the coins had it but until you get the grades you never know what you will get. I did have a flicker of hope for MS67FS on that 51-S
I can't really speak for the latter dates, after 1968, but I think the Jeffs have always had people taking shots at the POPs it is just that they don't come nice and the pops are low becasue of this, unlike Mercs, Roosies and Washingtons. Since they are not made of silver it is very hard to get the glow that PCGS likes for MS67, the hard metal meant die life was much shorter so many are not worthy of MS64 straight from the mint, in the day. The hard metal also meant that to increase die life the mint held back the pressure producing coins not fully struck most of the time, that is why FS coins are so sought after. Any P mint jefferson from 1943 on is uber tough in FS and aside of the war jeffs (42-45) are practically unheard of in MS67 much less MS68. All the early to mid 50's coins are tough in FS hence the very low populations. This order with 2 54's in FS is ~4% of the total FS population in all grades.
What did you originally pay for that $5,000 set of 4 Jefferson Nickels?
