Point of Selling These Rose RC "Reprints"

See this auction
..."due to ebays policy I will be selling them as reprints since they are not graded, please note that these dont say reprints at all anywhere so please bid accordingly,"

So, am I right in reading this that the guy knows these are reprints, but then hopes that one bids that he's wrong?

Sure makes you want to go out and pay big $$$ for a raw Rose RC, doesn't it?

Another "estate sale" purchase! Doesn't every estate have counterfeit Rose RC's lying around? Not a Wagner or a Mantle...not a Ruth or a Gehrig? No! Rose! I think I should email him and tell him to have that estate sale receipt handy when ebay cops call him.

  • Someone always bites.
    Seller is an A-hole.
  • Is that true, though? Does ebay require that ungraded cards be sold as "reprints" (I looked at what I could find but couldn't find anything on this policy)? And, what does it mean, "sold as reprints?" That you include a line saying "this is a reprint?"
"Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well."image
  • No, ebay doesnt care if something is graded or not. This guy is making a statement that he hopes absolves him from angry buyers when they get the card and it's super thin paper stock that someone ink jetted a rose rookie picture on!

  • The main reason I ask is that I see that phrase a lot on ebay. I guess in reality it's a red flag that the seller is a fraud. There is an ebay policy prohibiting disclaimers of responsibility, though.

  • the bad part is that it is a private auction.. i know, it is done so you can't notify the buyer that he is getting ripped off etc.. but, the buyer could be more underhanded than the seller. he is knowingly buying reprints.. then they get sent to GEM or PRO for grading.. then they are resold..
even if the cards are not going to be submitted in for grading.. all you do is resale them on eBay or your local show.. no one knows you bought them from this auction.

PRO and GEM don't grade reprints.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could slide a decent reprint past GEM. The first and only card I ever bought graded by GEM was a 78 Eddie Murray graded 10. $27 is a good deal, even if it qualifies as an 8 with another company, so I figured what the hell. The card didn't have one sharp corner and had a noticeable 2 inch crease. I sent an email to GEM telling them the situation and asking if they even look at the cards they grade.

    No, but RARE grading will.
There was an OPC Gretzky fake (without dot) that
end over $600 in a 10 grade from this company. Holder
and flip looked very similar to GEM. The seller was jlew
I believe who sells a lot of GEM cards.

As far as Ebay's allowance on certain phrases; I'm not aware that
"since it's ungraded, I'm selling it as a reprint" is valid or not, but for a long time when all the Gretzky and Jordan fakes that were being pulled, they only had "it's a reprint, but does not have the reprint stamp on them" which pretty says they're fakes. I serious doubt that there is any phrase allowance by Ebay. Someone made
it up and it's just constantly being used now with these scam artists because apparently it's working. Maybe
there's a loophole somewhere in there.
  • The lower left card has a diamond cut........maybe they are real?

The odds of these cards being real is about as close to zero as you can get. This card is still popular today but a few years before the betting scandal with Rose broke out, this card was on fire. And unfortunately this card was rampantly counterfeited. There are a lot of realistic good looking fakes out there. It wouldn't surprise me if some of these counterfeiters produced some diamond cuts to make them look even more realistic. As these fakes become older, sitting in someone's drawer or shoebox, they start developing "natural looking" wear just like a real card would. I highly recommend not ever buying this card raw off of ebay.

There's a nice NM7 I was day-dreaming about buying yesterday. I'm not going to touch anything that isn't graded by Beckett or PSA.
