Poll: Proof Modern Commemoratives - Slab or Leave in Mint packaging?

I have about 10 Proof Commemoratives that were gifts from the past 20 years and I considered getting them slabbed, mainly because I like storing them and looking at them that way. The grades don't matter much, because I don't plan on selling them. Being proofs still in the package, I would imagine they would all get PF67DCAM at the very minimum.

If you collect these, what do you do?

  • I keep them in the Mint packaging. I don't plan on selling them so I can't see spending extra $$ on grading fees.

If I ever decided to slab, I would definitely keep the mint packaging.

  • You should keep them in what ever form you prefer. Since you are not concerned with selling them, the decision should be totally yours and not influenced by what others say.

If you were going to sell them, you would do better (sell for more) on eBay if they were slabbed by PCGS and received a minimum grade of PR69. If you were not sure they would grade PR69 or PR70, you would likely do better leaving them in the original mint packaging.

I wanted to hear what others had to say because I haven't been seriously collecting (i.e. slabbed) for very long and hearing some opinions sometimes help me either make up my mind or avoid making a mistake I might regret. I'm also curious what other collector's do, especially those who've been at this for a long time. Of course the final decision of what I do will certainly be totally mine.

I agree with you about the 69's. If I decide to slab the coins, I'll study what would grade a 69 to make sure that's what I get. The difference between a 69 and a 70 seems like luck to me at this stage. They both look flawless from what I've seen.

If you want them in slabs, it's cheaper to buy them already slabbed. Let someone else make the 68s.
