Neat doubling on this Washington

I bought this for it's toning and eye appeal to add to my birth year collection. The doubling on the reverse was a bonus. Oh, and TeleTrade didn't push me to my max bid either.

  • Wow...that's pretty easy to see. Do you think it's strike doubling, or DDR? Is the DDR attributed on the slab?

Added: That's got to be strike doubling...right? That would be like the Washington equivalent of the 1955 Lincoln or something image

It's not attributed on the slab. I'm hoping one of the Washington experts on the forum might give their opinion. Anyway, I'm happy with it - the first coin in my collection with doubling. It's a PCGS MS66 - not rare but the toning is nice and the doubling a bonus.

  • It is not in CONECA's listings.

  • I vote machine doubling...and I can't even see the doubling in the picture. I have quite a few Washington quarters with pretty pronounced doubling and it has always been machine.

Now that doesn't mean yours is per say.....but that's my guess at this point image

Its not in the Wexler & Flynn book on doubled die varieties either.

So you have a machine doubled piece or a discovery piece. I hope it is a discovery piece (but not likely)

Thanks for all the replies. I expect that it's machine doubling too. Still interesting and on a pretty coin to boot.

Grip - I thought it might go for a bit more due to the toning. Happily it didn't.

I am sad to say, but it looks like MD to me.

I was thinking the same, but to be honest, the scan is not clear enough to make a call.

Hi Al. It is always a hard call off a pic or a scan, but looking at the lettering- The letters appear to be normal size with some shelving on the normal size letters. They do not look like a second punching next to a normal size letter. All this JMHO of course, but if I was a betting man- I would bet MD.
