NewP: I had to get this one......Morgan 1904-O..afterall it was my BDay!

OneyOney Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭✭
My wife sent me out on Saturday because she was planning a surprise BDay party for me. Since I already knew about it but did not want the friends and relatives to know i knew, I took the opportunity to go to my local coin shop and buy myself a little present. This coin has virtually no marks on the cheek and very clean fields. What do you think?

That's a nice one, and is a good strike for that date. It wouldn't look out of place in a 65 holder to me.

    That's a very attractive 1904-O. image

I'm guessing that it's a lock MS-65 and a shot MS-66 with that clean cheek and solid strike for the issue date/mm -- most of you know that I'm a pretty conservative grader...

  • Very Nice coin, and good strike for an 04-O. At least a 65!

Thanks, I think this has a very good shot at MS66. It was my 40th birthday, but this isn't my midlife crisis coin yet! image

Brian: You seem to prefer to purchase your Morgans raw and then send them in for certification. Are you a gambler by nature. or are you able to purchase the coins at well below market value for taking the grading risk?

You have a very good eye, and pick very lurstrous coins with super high eye appeal -- so whatever your strategy, I assume that it's been fun and successful for you!! image

Stuart, I consider the whole process a challenge that I enjoy. Sometimes I do well, then there are those other times like my last submission that returned 2 BB's. I try to negotiate a price that if my grade is wrong I break even. I also like testing my grading skills and hopefully reap alittle reward along the way. Overall, I like the series and the appearance of the coins. Much like you do!..... image

Looks strong 65 with a shot at 66 IMHO.
  • Nice looking coin...bought a 1904o in MS65 a couple of weeks ago, myself

  • I seldom offer grade opinions because I know my limitations, but I wanted to sayimage anyway, so I'll echo Stuart's assessment, at least 65 maybe 66. And good pics, too.

Tough coin to grade because of weaknesses in the strike. I also like the coin becuase it had a label from a coin store that went out of business years ago that I frequented in my youth!

The 1904 O are fairly common and I've seen some nice ones lately and own three myself. I just like nice pieces.
The contact marks look very light in the photo so I'm thinking MS65 as we can see that it's nicely struck and lustre looks good too.
    I recently bought a MS64 1901 - O for the same reason...my birthday.
Don't you wish they were all that nice and you could buy them for '04 O money? LOL
    Nice buy! Pete
