Who is the 55 Bowman expert?

My prize possesion is my complete master '55 Bowman baseball set. With the excepion of a few cards , it is ungraded. If it were graded by PSA the set would be loaded with 5's, 6's and 7's and I would bet a few 8's. There are about 35 cards I want to upgrade, that will not grade 5.

I have always had questions about the set and nowhere to get the answers:

I know the set is notorious for trimmed cards, but where not some cards cut short at the factory? How does one tell the difference?

I have some cards with subtle tone differences in the brown....some appear more red...some cards coloring seems washed out.......Do I have some bad cards here? I also notice color variations in the low "tan" series cards also.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Although I have never submitted cards to PSA before, I have been thinking of sending in some of what I consider my "gems" from this set.

I"d agree, Marc (Mikeschmidt on these boards) has so much knowledge about cards in general and '55 Bowmans in particular is it staggering. If you turn on your pm's and send one to him I'm sure you'll find out whatever you need to know. Best of luck.

I'm glad I caught this thread, as I do not often check these boards [and very infrequently do I find quality discussion on vintage sets I so love and adore].

Please send me an e-mail at mschoenen@mba2005.hbs.edu

I am humbled by Griffins comments - and I surely could not live up to such kind words. But I have lived and breathed this set exclusively for over 7 years now, and I feel qualified to discuss certain aspects of the set. I do look forward to your e-mail, and hope that I can learn more about the amazing set that you have put together.

    Cheers-

i believe helionuat or ydsotter is very knowing of this set also. might want to pm one of them!
  • i also have a set which i completed years before grading started.yes, there are short cut cards, they are 1/32" short. i still think these would not grade even though they are "factory" miscuts. yes, there are also tone differences in both borders.some tan cards still have red on 1 border. the series also has out of focus cards and mis cuts.this is also common on this issue, as bowman had no quality control.7 cards in a 5 cent pack.who cared back then. interestingly i have found few diamond cut cards on these.this was bowmans last year of production and speculation is they were hard up.hence low quality?
