Morgan Toners are Mind Boggling

I was just over at Teletrade looking at a bunch the "Rainbow" marked Morgan dollars, and the types of toners boggle the mind! You got textile, crescent, end-roll, mono-color, dual-colors, speckled, one sided toning, and the list goes on and on. I love toned Morgan threads...so pretty to look at, and I don't even collect Morgans, but one day, I'll find the perfect toner to add to a type collection. Here are a few that blew me away:

Here is one I picked up at a show in Lansing, MI today - my first Morgan "toner". I'm stoked.
Sorry for the quick picture - it has more neon green and purple when held just right.

You are right, I have never been able to figure out Teletrade's definition of "rainbow". Lately, it seems that anything that is not all black or all white is "rainbow".

That 84-O with the toned reverse is interesting, I just sold an 83-O with virtually the indentical reverse.
  • Chuck, those, esp the 84o, are MUCH nicer than what's been on Teletrade lately. Have you checked out the TCCS forum yet? The most unreal group of morgans was posted a couple days ago. Coat and tie not required, but a bib might be in order.

Cameonut, your first morgan toner? You're going to have to go some to beat it in the future. And a star to boot. Please post more pics when you can and show that rainbow.

Was playing with my cheap little camera today. This one's no monster but it's kinda cute.

  • Great colors fatman! Good pic too!

They need a designation that just says toned because now anything with any color is labeled Rainbow regardless of whether it has one color or five colors.

Jeremy, a simple level adjustment can do a lot to get rid of the nasty slab blocking your view.

Personally I find this problematic because, although it can greatly improve the appearance, it can may make the colours inaccurate. I did this with some of Dimitri's coins when I did his collection though. This coin is an example of that.

It's too much work to get rid of the slab when shooting a large collection so I had to find another way.

Cool--that's a bit darker than the coin, but I like it... the shot's old... oh, well. I'll reshoot the coin soon, wth an adjusted setup.

  • Great thread. I love toned Morgans. Great variety. Awesome intrinsic interest. In my opinion, they can give you great value if you can develop patience and an eye for the very best. In other words, you can get some of the very best toned Morgans for less than $5,000 to $10,000. I bought a PCGS MS68 coin with great color, just short of monster color, for less than 10K. The best toned Morgan I ever saw was sold to a bud of mine for less than 20K. That may sound like a lot of money but the prices keep going up and they are indeed cool to look at and own.

And if you want to spend far, far less, you can do that and still get great coins. $300 can get you a very cool Morgan. They´re also one of the few coins you can rip.
