I found something worthwhile at a card show...

...to me at least! I picked up a 68 Topps Brock PSA 8 for my set registry. I talked the guy down to 38 bucks. Not too bad for cash and carry. Anything graded of anykind was very rare at the show. Tons of raw vintage which would have been great if corners and centering didn't matter.

There was so much game used and autographed insert cards it made my head hurt!

I hadn't been to a show in probably 7 years, so overall I had a good time.

I really think we should start burning this stuff. I'm getting sick of seeing it everywhere at NRMT prices. It wouldn't be so bad if it was priced accordingly.

  • that's actually a pretty darn good price for a brock psa 8. Not only did you get it cheaper than the ebay average...you got it without dealing with S&H and the usual angst over USPS mailing. good job.

I hear you on the lack of graded material at shows. Went to the big labor day show in SF last year and there was literally no graded material...it was all raw, overpriced stuff that looks like it's been in binders for years or modern new GU/Auto stuff that was overpriced as well. In addition, the one dealer I did find with decent graded stuff was so far over book and what I've seen close on ebay, I didn't spend much time there.

Drove 2 hours each way to walk away with 3 cards....really soured me on the whole show experience. Ebay is a 24 hour a day show that I don't have to drive anywhere to, and don't have some dealer looking at me like I'm a criminal as I look through his cards.

I try to hit shows a few times a year. The raw material is always over beckett and no better than nm condition. These dealers are pricing their cards higher than if the card was slabbed.
  • the hollywood park show had a lot of graded Baseball from the 1950's for sale. Most dealers didn't have anything after 1965 graded though. Some of the big big names were, but not anywhere near the numbers on the 1950's stuff. Shows are fun if you are looking for several different years or players or items. I am usually looking for one or two things, so I don't end up with the same amount of purchases as some other guys.

The last Sun Times show in Chicago I did well with NM/MT raw football cards - but this is an exception to what I have found the past several years. Starx Cards was one of the only dealers w/ a nice mix of graded and reasonable priced raw 50's football. I bought a beautiful 1955 Bowman Bobby Layne for $40 that is a solid 8. Plus they are nice guys and the one even remembered me from the prior show.

I have no idea why the dealers bring graded material to the shows and then want an arm and leg for them. I did buy a PSA 9 1959 Topps fb common from Triple S Sportscards which was reasonably priced. I can't wait for the show next month.

  • I used to go to the Rothstein show in White Plains religiously. I only go once in a while now just to pick up some supplies and unopened material. I'm tired of looking at the same dealers, with the same overpriced inventory.

You comment makes me think of last year at the Fanfest show in Chicago when a dealer had a PSA 8 Sam Huff rookie marked for 150% of the PSA 8 SMR price. I offered him 105% of SMR and he laughed at me. I told him that I hoped he throws out his back out carrying home all his overpriced crap that wouldn't sell.

Amen! Unfortunately, I think things have been this way for a few years now. And will the market ever be oversaturated with game used/autographed insert cards? Or will every splinter of every bat and every strand of every piece of clothing of every major leaguer eventually end up as part of an insert? I would think the supply of this stuff will have to overwhelm the demand eventually and severely glut the market and knock prices down. Nevertheless, never underestimate the ingenuity of manufacturers to pump out more product.
  • I don't hate Game used cards as much as others on here. I don't collect, but I don't hate them. What I DO hate is when Upper Deck or something else cuts up a Babe Ruth Jersey or Jim Thorpe jersey or some other true GREAT! That's insane. They can cut up as many Eli Manning or Barry Bonds jerseys as they want. Those punks can wear a new one! Those other guys are DEAD!! How many of those jersey are even out there.

  • i agree with u 100% kingraider - the memorabilia of the greats should be preserved - the idea for the cards is cool but its more then a jersey that was worn last year - its a piece of history of our favorite game - i think its too important to be in a piece of cardboard - i did like the idea UD had a few years ago where they gave away a nice peice of memorabilia each month insteada of chopping it and making an insert - if u think about it - how many cards can u get forma jersey ? the odds of pulling it are ultra rare - so why not just give away the whole jersey ( atleast it would be preserved and the odds are even more impossible ) plus it would be most significant (i think anyway) well just my opinion
