MastoNet Disapointment for hockey fans

For baseball, there's a few nice cards up for auction. But for hockey?? Hopefully they are not done listing all of them. Good thing your not getting charged the 75.00 dollars for this auction !! I hate registering for auctions unless i see what is going to be up for auction first. Most auction house's make you have to register first before you get to see what they have. I am not going to pay 75.00 dollars for there
BIG BLING BLING auction unless i can do a search first. There is always more baseball then hockey. That is fine but to fork out 75.00 when you collecy hockey and there's absolutely nothing worth bidding on? Not happening here.
What do you think all you hockey nuts out there !!

that's just the nature of things, steve. you'll never see that much hockey in the major american auctions. i signed up for mastro's collector auctions but not for the premium auctions. it's not so much because of the fee or the relative lack of hockey stuff per se, but because i figure i'd never be able to afford anything anyway.

  • yawie99 - I see you are from St. Louis, I'm just a bit SW from there (150 miles or so) and am planning on attending a card show in St. Charles in a couple weeks, are you familiar with the show? Is it any good for vintage football collectors?

  • Given the current state of professional hockey in North America, it's not surprising that they would scale back their hockey offerings, but I ask you this...

i'm not really sure, BDTM. i actually live in st. peters so those shows are real close to me (i assume you mean the heart of st. charles banquet center shows) but i've never attended one. i might go to one or two local shows a year, but i don't usually pay close attention to the football offerings. that said, it seems like the shows i've been to over the last few years have not had a great selection of vintage non-baseball cards. or at least pre '70 non-baseball stuff.

  • Everybody knows all auction houses have less hockey then baseball. Even in Canada. Well maybe not the expo. But i figured there would be some older PSA rarities being offered. For rarities the hockey lockout would not effect them in anyway. Especially highly sought after 8's and 9's. Maybe 70's and up might be effected. But then again all it takes is 2 bidders willing to go at it. I am going to try to make it to the expo this year. People say it's better to go the last day for better bargains if you can't be there all weekend. Is this true? The closest thing to a half decent card show near me is the Gilbralter Tade Center in Michigan. Even that is getting harder to find older ungraded and graded cards.
And if you do find them they are usually at high book price for there ungraded. I'd rather buy cards already graded unless i know the seller really well. I bought alot of ungraded off of Gerry's but i was very happy with all cards. Well maybe -1. Centering was a little off center for my liking. Anyway's back to the Expo question. Does it matter which day you go?

    Steve,
I have attended all of the Expos (as a dealer and/or collector) except the first one. One of the problems with going Sunday is that a great number of dealers pack up early and with the hockey lockout this year I imagine it will be very slow. I would probably recommend going Friday.
Buying ungraded at the Expo is okay but be very careful as the lighting in the room is terrible. Most dealers will have EX-EXMT cards at Beckett NM or better prices.

Keep in mind that the 75. for Mastro is effectively a 1 time charge. As long as you place at least 1 bid in every auction, whether you win or not, you're assured of staying on the mailing list. Open the bidding on 1 lot, the minimums are always way below what they close at, and you'll get the most informative catalog in the hobby several times a year.
BTW, went thru the L.A. show today and saw 1 dealer with vintage hockey. It is a distant 4th here, but he had some really nice stuff.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Yawie99 - That's pretty much how it is for just about every non-National-type show, very little in the way of vintage football. However, it seems there is aalways at least one dealer with a decent stock (usually overpriced, however) and a couple, if you start asking around, that has some in a binder, or shoebox behind the table, that they got in a deal, and can't seem to sell, because they don't normally deal FB. I love finding those small little batches of cardboard gold, usually at nice prices. It sounds like it''ll be just as much of a gamble either way, but it beats the alternative, which is NO local shows where I'm at, at all.

  • Thanks aro13, i'm going to try to see if i can for the weekend but i honestly doubt i can get away for weekend from my job at this rate. But the Expo is still a few months away so hopefully i can. PSA has not been there in awhile. Wonder if someone from PSA can answer this one. Are you going to the EXPO this year?
    Thanks Steve
